The Relay Readers were a set of twenty-four graded story books specially developed by the British
author, Barrie Johnson BA MEd, for teenage reluctant readers and first published by UK educational
publishers Schofield & Sims Ltd. in 1981 and 1982. The books were sold internationally and were
designed to build confidence, assist comprehension and give pleasure by presenting short, lively
stories at an appropriate interest level.
The series was planned on four levels of difficulty, based upon readability, vocabulary choice, grammatical complexity and total word length. Each stage consisted of six books which were intended to make reading as easy as possible by being clearly laid out and by assisting the prediction of word pattens and meaning. The four levels were colour coded for easy identification and to relate to activity materials which accompanied the series. The activity materials were co-authored by Margaret Cox BA MEd.
The Relay Readers dealt with the same group of characters throughout, providing continuity and a measure of familiarity – the reader was able to move to the next book already knowing the people in the story and readily identifying with them. The artwork by illustrator Ray Mutimer (NB the Postman Pat and the Rupert books) was intended to appeal directly to teenagers and to semi-literate young adults.
The Relay Activity Materials were introduced to encourage genuine language development amongst less able students through a variety of techniques, including cloze procedure, sequencing, prediction, modelling, writing extension, questionnaires and word puzzles. Many of the activities were recommended for use within group situations, offering a more stimulating alternative than the passive and solitary contributions often required by remedial materials.
The reading series went out of print in 2000.
