Draft:The Phoenix Library
The Phoenix Library is a library in Gaza, Palestine. It opened on the 21st April 2026.
The library contains over 6000 books in both Arabic and English.[1] Some items were donated from other countries, and around 1000 were found in rubble in Gaza.[2]
History
As part of the Gaza genocide, which many scholars claim has involved systematic scholasticide,[3][4] most large libraries have been destroyed, leaving books in rubble.[5] Friends Omar Hamad and Ibrahim Massri began to collect these books, and then raised over $100,000 to start a new library with them.[2] The money was raised via crowdfunding.[1] The two have documentated the progress and opening of the library on social media.[6]
The library functions as a community space.[7] Soon after opening, the library held its first event - a reading of the novel A Spark of Fire by Palestinian author Mahmoud Al-Basyouni.[8]
