Gameplay
One run is approximately twenty minutes, but it will take more than a single one to complete the game. The game will cut your journey short by giving you a countdown via destroyed paintings in which you can retrieve Inspiration coins from. A bell will toll, closing off the entrance of the way you came into the current room. Once it gets to zero, either the walls will crumble, causing the Labyrinth to collapse on top of you, or the Figure kills you.
Movement is made by a point-and-click system[3]. Inspirations coins and dialogue are done the same way. Every time you respawn, the Labyrinth shifts, so that you can never go the route you did in your last run. This makes it impossible to map out the maze through rooms and portals.
Riddles and inspiration open up new doors—paintings that access rooms—by saying a concept out loud. The more paintings and artifacts you discover, the more will be added into your gallery. You will have to say a max of three to the inspiration coin before it can provide a painting.
An image can open up several rooms, and you can go see which ones it opens through the menu. This resets every run, as it is an ever-changing maze.
Aside from the main journey and character tasks, you can also take part in side quests that grant you inspiration. Some, such as completing the pages of a journal, do not however.
There are seven characters you can interact with, two of which being historical figures—Vasco Nunez de Balboa, and Khurram. Each of them come from a different time, from a conquistador, to a urchin from the Victorian era. Certain objects are connected to these people, and bringing the two together will free the character from the Labyrinth.
Plot
You are trying to find your friend, Professor Sheldrake, who has gone missing. In her room, you find a painting and a riddle which upon solving, leads you inside the Labyrinth. Upon entry and a little wandering around, you will find a origami paper horse. Following its directions will lead you to the Figure, a mysterious person who is also stuck in this Forever Labyrinth and is trying to find something called the Source.
Eventually, they will leave you on your own, waiting for you to find this Source that they're talking about. Finding it on your very first run is rare and unlikely, as the Figure will run out of patience and kill you. From there, you will respawn in Professor Sheldrake's room, where you can enter the Labyrinth again. A monster is also hunting you down during your quest for the Source.
When you finally get there, the Figure will feast on all the Inspiration that resides in this place and the people trapped inside. Now realizing their intentions, you determine to stop the Figure. Once you return to your friend's room, you will find her.
It does not matter who you save out of the total seven characters; as long as you free three of them, you destroy the Labyrinth and defeat the Figure.
When you return back to Sheldrake's room, on the floor lies a dead inspiration coin. Seeing that your quest is complete, you can leave the room and finish the game.
