The series centers around the eponymous Filthy Frank, a self-proclaimed "anti-vlogger" who engages in various bizarre, often dangerous shenanigans with his friends.[2] The series also features various rants, comedy hip-hop, extreme challenges and cultural parodies.[3] The series aired from August 5, 2011 to September 27, 2017 across Miller's channels DizastaMusic,[4] TVFilthyFrank,[5] and TooDamnFilthy.[6]

Premise

The series revolves around the titular Filthy Frank and his group of oddball companions. Frank is a middle-aged Japanese man who typically rants about various topics, ranging from Japanophiles,[7] to different kinds of Internet personalities he holds disdain for.[8] Frank is also shown to have a low moral compass, frequently engaging in numerous lowbrow, distasteful activities, such as cooking meals with dead rats, bathing in ramen, and baking cakes made out of human hair.[a] Alongside Frank, other characters include Pink Guy, Salamander Man, Chin-Chin & Safari Man, all of whom are played by Joji Miller.

Characters

Main Cast

  • Joji Miller as:
    • Filthy Frank (Full name: Dr. Francis of the Filth) - A middle-aged Japanese man who engages in rants about different topics, distasteful challenges, and conducting scientific research on the equally odd among him.[b]
    • Pink Guy - A pink Lycra wearing entity; who despite speaking in gibberish, holds exceptional rapping[9][10][c] and breakdancing skills.[11] He is Frank's best friend and helps him out in multiple bizarre situations.
    • Salamander Man - An entity who frequently rubs his nipples and sports a white unitard and a hat resembling a Salamander head. He can only communicate by blurting out "Nyess" and is able to play the flute through his nose.[12]
    • Safari Man - A stereotypical Japanese tourist and one of Frank's many roommates, being one of his only human companions and constantly exclaiming "WOW!", often for no reason.
    • Chin-Chin - A dark lord of the "Omniverse", who is the main antagonist of the series and is the opponent to Frank and his companions, frequently terrorising them throughout numerous episodes.

Supporting Cast

  • Lewis Welt as The Shaman - A spiritual healer who has dwarfism, and who also occasionally acts as a voice of reason, calling out Frank's disgusting antics.[d]
  • Prometheus - A muscular man who commonly wears nothing but underwear, and an associate of Filthy Frank and Pink Guy. He possesses immense physical strength and is shown to hold power equal to Chin-Chin.[13][14]
  • Lake Markham as Dade[15]- A bald man who vomits chocolate and can only communicate through gibberish and screaming.[e]
  • Red Dick - One of Filthy Frank and Pink Guy's close friends, he wears a red Lycra outfit and is shown to be a very monotone person, rarely speaking but still being able to understand Pink Guy’s gibberish.[17]
  • Rei Brown as Black Friend - Another of Pink Guy's friends, where he likewise wears a black Lycra outfit.[18][19]
  • Maxmoefoe and IDubbbz as themselves - Two long friends of Frank, where they collaborated together on multiple videos from 2015-2016.[f]
  • Joji Miller as:
    • Lemon - A mentally disabled entity who wears a lemon hat, and repeatedly screams "I’m a lemon!" And "21".[20]
    • PolitikZ - An inept underground rapper, who considers himself to be the savior of hip-hop and heavily dislikes mainstream rap music.[21][g]
    • Fake Frank - A major antagonist and imposter of Frank, who took over the show for most of 2015-2016. Fake Frank is differentiated from the real Frank by wearing black goggles and an aviator hat.

Background and History

DizastaMusic (2011-2014)

Before Filthy Frank, Joji Miller dedicated the DizastaMusic YouTube channel to various skits made among him and his friends from 2008-2009, before leaving the channel on hiatus for two years. On August 5, 2011, Miller uploaded the video "Filthy Shit", introducing the character of Filthy Frank for the first time.[22] The first few videos consisted of a mock-vlog format of Frank talking about his high school experiences,[23] before moving into a more generalised style of comedy, including outside pranks[24] and skit compilations.[25]

Harlem Shake (2013)

Miller would create the Harlem Shake meme in a video uploaded on January 30, 2013 entitled "Filthy Compilation #6 – Smell My Fingers", where its opening featured a section where Pink Guy and several costumed people danced to the song "Harlem Shake" by Baauer.[26] The video would quickly become a viral Internet meme, and by February 15, about 40,000 Harlem Shake spinoff videos had been uploaded, collectively generating over 700 million views.[27][28]

Miller reveals himself (2014)

On May 3, 2014, Miller uploaded a video titled "FILTHY FRANK EXPOSES HIMSELF???", where he introduced himself to the audience for the first time, and explained that he had to reveal himself due to how pressure from college and running the series, alongside an undisclosed medical condition, were causing stress-induced seizures.[29] He would also announce that he had moved the series from DizastaMusic to TVFilthyFrank due to multiple community strikes risking termination on the former channel.[h]

In late 2014, Miller would private the initial reveal video, as well as other Filthy Frank videos where he featured himself as a cameo. This was because, as revealed on his personal Twitter account, Miller was stressed with fans "Badgering [me] about [my] life because they cared TOO much", also mentioning that the initial video was a "rash decision" made "fresh out of the hospital".[30][31]

TVFilthyFrank (2014-2017)

Starting in 2014 until 2017, Miller would consistently upload the rest of the series on the TVFilthyFrank channel, as well as his second channel TooDamnFilthy. During this era, many of Miller’s most famous sub-series’ on the channel would be created, such as "JAPANESE 101",[32] "LOSER READS HATE COMMENTS",[33] "CRINGE OF THE WEEK",[34] and the infamous "Cake Trilogy" featuring Maxmoefoe, IDubbbz and HowToBasic.[35][36][37]

Miller would also release numerous singles teasing the release of Pink Guy’s debut album over 2015-2016, such as "DUMPLINGS",[38] "RICE BALLS",[39] and "STFU",[40] the latter of which has 95 million views as of February 2026.

Pink Season, Final Videos, and Retirement (2017)

On January 4, 2017, Pink Guy's long anticipated comedy hip-hop debut album, Pink Season, was released by Miller on YouTube[41]and iTunes.[42] It peaked at number 70 on the Billboard Top 200[43] and topped the Billboard Comedy Charts.

2017 had the least amount of Filthy Frank episodes, with the only two new episodes being "WHY DRONES SUCK"[44] and "7 EASY WAYS TO MAKE CHOCOLATE AT HOME".[45]

On September 27, 2017, the final Filthy Frank episode "FRANCIS OF THE FILTH" was released.[46] This would also mark the final video uploaded by Miller on either Filthy Frank channel as of 2026. The video serves as a promotion for the book of the same name, which expands on the branching lore and in-universe history of the series.[47]

On December 29, 2017, Miller, who by late 2017 had begun moving into a serious music career under the name Joji,[48][49] would announce his retirement from comedy and the end of Filthy Frank. Miller stated that his decision was because of a lack of enjoyment in continuing to produce the series, as well as struggling with serious health issues, such as throat tissue damage and neurological conditions.[50]

Impact

A man cosplaying as Fake Frank in 2017

The Filthy Frank Show had a significant impact on 2010's meme culture, reshaping internet shock humour[51] and being responsible for the creation of many viral internet memes,[52] such as "It’s Time to Stop",[53] and most famously, the Harlem Shake craze in 2013,[28] which helped debut Baauer’s eponymous song atop the Billboard Top 100.[54]
