It functions as an umbrella category for musical styles characterized by intensive use of modular synthesis and non-linear rhythmic structures.

The genre was formalized as a consolidation standard to unify several underground movements within the electronic music scene, specifically merging elements of experimental Drum & Bass with industrial Techno aesthetics.
