Sunpine is a Swedish industrial company based in Piteå, Sweden, producing bio-based products derived from crude tall oil, a by-product of the kraft pulp process. Founded in 2006, the company’s main product is “Raw Tall Diesel”, an advanced biofuel feedstock used in the production of renewable diesel such as Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).
According to its annual report, Sunpine reported net sales of SEK 2.7 billion in 2024. The Piteå facility has a production capacity of approximately 200 000 tons of Raw Tall Diesel per year.
Sunpine also refines crude tall oil into several other bio-based products. Through distillation and chemical processing, the company product portfolio consists of Raw Tall Diesel, rosin, bio-oil, and alpha-Pinene.
The company is owned in roughly equal parts by Preem AB, Sveaskogs Förvaltnings AB, Södra Skogsägarna ekonomisk förening and the chemical company Lawter BVBA.
History
Sunpine was founded in 2005 by Swedish chemical engineer Lars Stigsson, who sought to commercialise a process for producing diesel-range feedstock from crude tall oil.
Early development work was carried out together with chemist Valeri Naydenov, focusing on separating and refining tall oil components into a diesel-type intermediate suitable for further upgrading. Laboratory development during the mid-2000s led to the establishment of a commercial production concept.
In 2008, the company secured industrial backing from Swedish forestry and energy companies, including Sveaskog, Södra and Preem, enabling construction of a full-scale production facility in Piteå, Sweden.
Commercial production of Raw Tall Diesel began in the late 2000s.
In 2018, Stigsson and Naydenov were awarded the Polhem Prize (Polhemspriset), a Swedish engineering award administered by Sveriges Ingenjörer, in recognition of the development of the tall oil diesel production process.
According to an analysis by the news service Impact Loop, Sunpine recorded the largest increase in turnover among Swedish impact companies between 2022 and 2023, with revenue rising by approximately SEK 900 million from around SEK 3 billion to nearly SEK 4 billion.

Raw Tall Diesel
Raw Tall Diesel is an intermediate bio-based feedstock derived from crude tall oil, a by-product of the kraft pulping process. Raw Tall Diesel is not used directly as a transport fuel but serves as a feedstock in hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) refining processes, where it is converted into renewable diesel that can be used as a drop-in fuel in existing diesel engines.
Under the European Union Renewable Energy Directive (Directive (EU) 2018/2001, RED II), crude tall oil is included among the feedstocks listed in Annex IX Part A, which defines materials eligible for the production of advanced biofuels.
Biofuels produced from Annex IX Part A feedstocks may qualify as advanced biofuels under EU law, provided that sustainability and greenhouse gas criteria are fulfilled. Such fuels contribute toward specific advanced biofuel targets within the EU transport sector framework.
Bio-oil
Sunpine also produces bio-oil derived from tall oil fractions. Bio-oil is used as a renewable heating fuel in industrial boilers and energy systems as a substitute for fossil fuel oil.
Tall oil rosin
Sunpine also produces tall oil rosin, a rosin primarily composed of resin acids. Tall oil rosin is used in adhesives, inks, coatings, and rubber compounds.
Alpha-pinene
Sunpine has developed a process to extract alpha-pinene from crude tall oil. Alpha-pinene is a monoterpene used in fragrance chemistry and specialty chemicals.
