"Sugar Talking" is a song by the American singer Sabrina Carpenter from her seventh studio album, Man's Best Friend (2025). Written and produced by Carpenter, Amy Allen and John Ryan, "Sugar Talking" is a soft rock song anchored by a clean electric guitar and funk-influenced drum grooves. Lyrically, Carpenter expresses her frustration to her boyfriend, who uses smooth charisma to get closer to her, demanding action instead of "sugar talking".
Some critics praised the lyrics and mature themes of "Sugar Talking". The track peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Composition
"Sugar Talking" is 3 minutes and 3 seconds long. It mainly incorporates elements of R&B, pop-soul and soft rock. Kaia Mueller of The Tartan described the song as a continuation of the story of Carpenter's song, "My Man on Willpower" off the same album.[1] Throughout the track, the narrator attempts to finally break up with a lover who relies on sweet or "sugar talking". Instead of being charming and pursuasive, she insists on putting effort (Put your loving where your mouth is; Get your sorry ass to mine). She dismissed his attempts on reconcilation through flattery and long messages (Your sugar talking isn't working tonight; Yeah, your paragraphs mean shit to me), realizing he is unsincere and annoyingly repetitive (You filled my whole apartment with flowers that die; It’s verbatim what you said last week / It's your seventh last chance, honey).
