Skyjo is a card game that was created in Japan. There are 133 cards consisting of ten sets of values "1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12", five "-2", four "-1", four "0". The game is played in Rounds, and can consist of many rounds. A game is over when a player reaches 100 or more point; that person loses the game. (More than one person may exceed 100 points in a final round; the highest score loses.)
Twelve cards are dealt to each player. At the end of the deal, a player looks at their cards. Then after organizing the cards (more on this later) they then place them face down in four columns with three cards in each column, The player should do their best to remember what cards are in what columns and rows. The remainder of the cards (called the "Common Deck") are placed face down in the middle of the table, with one card from the deck being placed face up. (this is called the "Discard Pile")
Play: On Round 1, all players turn over any two cards. The player with the highest value then is the first to play. (If two players match high points, the first person to the left of the dealer is considered the highest hand.) A player may choose either the top card from the Discard Pile OR the top face down card from the Common Deck. If a card is chosen from the Common Deck, the player has three choices: 1. add it immediately to the top of the Discard Pile, 2. replace it with a face down card from their own cards, or 3. replace it with a face up from their own cards. If a card is chosen from the Discard Pile, it only can replace a face up card from their own pile.
The game is over when a player is the first to have all of their cards turned face up. Once that is done, play continues for all remaining players for 1 more draw from the Common Deck. At the time, all players turn all of their cards face up, and each person totals their points shown. The person with the lowest point total wins that round.
(Game over continued) if Player A that turns all of their cards over first is underscored by an opponent (Player B), then that Player A's score is doubled.
Strategy: if a player matches all of the same value in a column showing face up (e.g. all three cards are "9"), then those three cards are moved to the Discard Pile; therefore a player should try to remember what card values are put face down at the start of the game; therefore, as cards are drawn that player can establish matches for a column and then move those cards to the Discard Pile. (this reduces card values to count at the end of a round)
