Sirius Insight is a British technology company specialising in artificial intelligence-based maritime surveillance and maritime domain awareness systems. The company develops software platforms that integrate satellite data, radar inputs and Automatic Identification System (AIS) signals to monitor vessel activity and detect anomalous behaviour.
The company has been referenced in UK government procurement records and parliamentary materials in connection with maritime surveillance contracts.[1][2]
History
Sirius Insight was founded in 2016 in the United Kingdom by Malcom Glaister and Professor Mischa Dohler.[2][3]
Work
In 2024, the company was contracted by the UK Home Office to track "small boats" operating within inland waterways.[4] An Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) decision notice in 2024 referenced Sirius Insight in the context of Freedom of Information requests relating to Home Office maritime surveillance contracts.[5]
In 2024, Sirius Insight was contracted by the UK Government to provide surveillance equipment to marine protected areas in the Maldives as part of the Ocean Country Partnership Programme. The contract details that the equipment will be used to monitor the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve, and flag any potentially harmful himan activity.[1]
Technology
Sirius Insight develops AI-driven maritime surveillance software that combines multiple sensor inputs, including AIS data, radar feeds and satellite imagery, to provide maritime domain awareness. The system is designed to detect anomalous vessel behaviour and potential illicit activity such as illegal fishing or sanctions evasion.[2]
The company has collaborated with radar software firms to integrate tracking and visualisation technologies into its platform.[6]
Governance
The director of Sirius Insight, Malcom Glaister, had a career in the Royal Navy and private banking before co-founding the company with Professor Mischa Dohler.[7]
Conservative peer and former MP for Havant Lord Willetts was chair of the advisory board in 2024[4], and retains shares in the parent company Sirius Constellation Ltd.[7][8] In an article published by The Independent in 2024, Willetts was accused of "profiting from the small boats crisis" after Sirius were awarded a £3 million Home Office contract.[4]
Lord Reid of Cardowan is a senior advisor to the company, and has expressed his enthusiasm for supporting UK businesses exporting AI technology to international markets.[9][10]
Awards
In 2024, Sirius Insight was recognised with a King’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category.[11]
