Comment: There isn't a clear pathway to the criteria in WP:NACADEMIC here. The h-index is referenced, but at 32 it's below the typical range and suggests WP:TOOSOON. Accepting that in this disciple, h-index is likely to be on the lower side. The other criteria does not appear as a strong pass either, and there is a high chance that this draft would hit problems with New Page Patrol and / or Articles for Deletion. Simone Borghesi (Siena, 21 November 1969) is an Italian economist specialised in environmental economics, climate policy, and sustainable development. He is a Full Professor of Environmental Economics at the University of Siena and a part-time professor at the European University Institute.
He is Director of the Climate Area of the Florence School of Regulation at the European University Institute and currently serves as Deputy Rector for International Relations at the University of Siena. He has also served as President of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE)[1], a leading scientific association in the field of environmental economics, as well as President of the Italian Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (IAERE)[2].
He is a member of the Academic Advisory Council of the Center on Regulation and Markets at the Brookings Institution (Washington, D.C.) and of the Economic Advisory Council of the Environmental Defense Fund (New York), as well as a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (Paris) and a Council Member of the World Council of Environmental and Resource Economists Associations (WCEREA).
Education and early career
Borghesi obtained a BSc in Economics from the University of Siena, a MSc in Economics from University College London, and a PhD in Economics from the European University Institute. Early in his career, he worked at the International Monetary Fund and at the Fondazione ENI Enrico Mattei.
Research
His research focuses on environmental and resource economics, with particular emphasis on climate policy, emissions trading systems, and sustainability. His work has contributed to both academic and policy debates on market-based instruments for environmental regulation, carbon pricing, and emissions trading schemes. He has published in leading international journals such as Science, Research Policy, The Scandinavian Journal of Economics, Ecological Economics, Ecological Indicators, Energy Economics, Environmental Science and Policy, and Environmental and Resource Economics.
He has also been involved in international research initiatives on climate policy, including the report Pathways to Deep Decarbonization in Italy, developed within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network. He has been an invited speaker at leading global institutions, among them Harvard University, Columbia University, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the World Bank, the European Investment Bank, and Resources for the Future, and has presented at multiple sessions of the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26, COP27, COP28, COP29, COP30).
According to his Google Scholar profile,[3] his research has received several thousand citations, with an h-index reflecting sustained academic impact in the field of environmental economics.
He has directed several European Commission-funded research projects on emissions trading and climate policy, including four consecutive LIFE projects.[4]
Public engagement
Borghesi contributes to public debate on climate policy and sustainability through media appearances, public lectures, and policy-oriented discussions. His work has been featured in Italian media outlets such as Corriere della Sera,[5] La Nazione,[6] Milano Finanza,[7] Il Manifesto,[8] and other publications addressing environmental policy and the economics of climate change.[9] He has also delivered public talks on climate economics, including presentations hosted on the TED platform.[10]
