Santitham is a neighbourhood in tambon Chang Phueak in the city of Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand. It is located directly north of Chiang Mai's Old City, and west of Nimmanhaemin Road.
About
It is a popular residential area for students and is an up and coming area for tourists due to its proximity to central commercial districts.[1] It is characterized by small restaurants and food stands, shophouses and smaller condominiums, inhabited by students who want to live close to Chiang Mai Rajabhat University. The neighbourhood is more affordable than adjacant Nimman district and has a local feel to it with limited tourist attractions.[2]
History
Chang Phueak Gate, the northern gate of the Old City, has been a primary ceremonial entrance to Chiang Mai since the Lanna period - and is one of the first recorded historical landmarks bordering Santitham. Just north of the Chang Phuaek Gate, The Chang Phueak Monument was built between 1388 and 1411 by king Saenmueangma, the ninth king of Lanna.
In 1947 when clearing of the land for Wat Santitham was initiated, the builders discovered remains of an undocumented temple.[3]
The area was during 20th century associated by Thai-local entertainment, girly bars, and short-stay establishments in the streets close to Chang Phueak Road. This image changed around 2010 when new condominiums were built and shophouses converted into residential units pushed real estate prices up, and entertainment venues out. [4]
Notable landmarks
Siriwattana Market (Kad Thanin)

Wat Santitham
Wat Santitham was founded on 15 October 1955 and received a royal designation (วิสุงคามสีมา, wisungkhamsima) in 1957, making it sacred boundary where monks perform official ceremonies, such as ordinations.[6] The temple consists of an ordination hall, a golden stupa (Santi Chedi), and a small museum featuring relics of the Buddha, relics of Arahants (enlightened people), and other respected monks across Thailand.[7]
