Draft:Ruth Daniel

  • Comment: The main problem is the lack of independent coverage. See the WP:GOLDENRULE and we ideally need 3 robust examples of that. Interviews do not count. Subjects can't write/broadcast their own notability, someone independent needs to do that, such as profiles in newspapers. Most of the sources are either traceable back to the subject or interviews. Less problematic is that this comes across as a promotional résumé rather than a crisp summary of their notable life and works. ChrysGalley (talk) 12:04, 23 May 2026 (UTC)

Ruth Daniel is a British music activist, arts organiser, and charity leader. She is the CEO and Artistic Director of In Place of War, an international non-governmental organisation using music, art, and creativity in communities affected by armed conflict, social injustice, and climate change. She holds an Honorary Research Fellowship at the University of Manchester and is a Visiting Scholar at the Hip-Hop Education Center in New York.

Early life and musical career

Daniel was born and raised in Manchester, England. She began playing guitar at the age of eight.[1] She performed as a musician with several bands, most notably the cult Manchester post-punk band The Fall.[2]

She co-founded Un-Convention, a grassroots alternative music industry conference focused on independent and community-led models of music-making, and founded an independent record label.[3]

In Place of War

Daniel has led In Place of War as CEO and Artistic Director since the organisation transitioned from a University of Manchester research project, founded in 2004 by Professor James Thompson, into a global charity. Under her leadership it grew to operate with a network of over 130 partner organisations across more than 30 countries.[4]

In February 2024, Radiohead musician and In Place of War Fellow Ed O'Brien presented a BBC Radio 4 Charity Appeal on the organisation's behalf. Daniel described the funds raised as supporting the #HackMusic Catalyst Fund, which finances grassroots music projects in conflict-affected communities including Lebanon, Colombia, and the Peruvian-Colombian border region.[4]

In 2024 In Place of War received the WOMEX Professional Excellence Award. Accepting the award, Daniel called on artists and activists to use music and their platforms to work collectively for peace.[5]

EarthSonic

Daniel founded EarthSonic, a global music and climate programme operating under In Place of War, in 2023. The programme uses music, indigenous knowledge, and storytelling to communicate the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss, with a primary focus on young people aged 11 to 30.

In 2024 EarthSonic launched publicly as a record label, sound archive, and events series. Music Ally described the label as aiming to operate as a carbon-free enterprise, with a sound archive housing recordings from scientists, nature sound recordists, and indigenous communities.[6] Partners at launch included A2IM, AFEM, BBC, Beatport, PRS Foundation, Roland, and Resident Advisor.

International collaborations

Daniel has produced music collaborations across the world, including work between jazz musicians in Soweto and UK electronic act Coldcut, projects involving Brian Eno, recordings with indigenous artists in the Arctic, and work with electronic duo BICEP.[3]

Speaking and academia

Daniel holds an Honorary Research Fellowship at the [[University of Manchester]] and is a Visiting Scholar at the Hip-Hop Education Center in New York. She has lectured at the University of Warwick, University of Cambridge, and the University of Manchester, and has written degree and masters programmes for several academic institutions.[7]

She has delivered keynote addresses and presentations at over 100 international events. These include keynotes at SXSW (2019), the Euromed Women's Forum in Jordan (2019), SIM Sao Paulo (2017), Red Bull Music Academy Sao Paulo (2015), Face The Music Melbourne (2015), Internet Age Media Barcelona (2015), and TRIMARCHI Argentina (2011). She has also presented at By:Larm Oslo, Primavera Pro Barcelona, The Conference Malmo, TEDx, Primavera Sound Barcelona, DoaDoa East African Performing Arts Market, and the Berlin Music Week, among many others across Africa, South America, Europe, and Asia.[7]

She was the subject of a seminar in the Pathfinders series at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance, curated by producer Matthew Dear, in 2021.[8]

She co-hosts a podcast called Music Saved My Life with Laima Leyton. She is Carbon Literate certified and a member of the Nordic Women's Leadership Network.
