Rug Doctor Ltd. is a UK-based company specialising in the hire, manufacture and sale of carpet and floor-cleaning equipment and cleaning solutions.[1] It operates as the UK subsidiary of Rug Doctor, an American floor care equipment manufacturer founded in 1972.[2] The UK business is headquartered in Worthing, West Sussex, and is best known for its nationwide carpet cleaning machine hire service. The company has been a subsidiary of Bissell since 2022.

History

Rug Doctor was founded in Fresno, California, in 1972 by entrepreneur Roger Kent.[2][3] The UK subsidiary, Rug Doctor Ltd., was incorporated on 10 February 1981, marking the company's expansion into the British market.[2][4]

Since its establishment in the UK, Rug Doctor Ltd. has operated primarily through a retail hire model, partnering with national home improvement and grocery retailers.[5] The first self-service locker rental machines were made available in Tesco and were subsequently rolled out to ASDA.[6]

UK leadership transitioned in 2025 when Benjamin Warcup was appointed managing director in October, succeeding Kuldip Dosanjh, who retired after serving as managing director since 2010.[7][8] As of 2025, the company's board of directors includes Kevin McAndrew, Michael Best, and Christopher Forsberg, who also serve in executive roles within the parent company following its acquisition by Bissell.[9]

In 2015, Travis Lewis was appointed chief executive officer of the parent company.[10][11][12] The company undertook a corporate rebrand and invested in operational modernisation initiatives.[13][14] In 2022, Rug Doctor was acquired by Bissell, a privately held floor-care manufacturer.[15]

In 2025, the company became a member of BHETA (British Home Enhancement Trade Association).[16][17]

Community involvement

Rug Doctor has supported charitable initiatives in the United Kingdom. Between approximately 2007 and 2010, staff fundraising efforts at the company’s Worthing headquarters raised over £3,500 for the assistance dog charity Canine Partners, contributing toward the training of service dogs for people with disabilities.[18]

Operations

Rug Doctor Ltd.'s core business model in the United Kingdom centres on the short-term rental hire of carpet-cleaning machines made available through retail partners.[19][20] As of 2025, machines are available to hire from approximately 3,000 retail locations across the United Kingdom, including national chains such as Tesco, ASDA, Morrisons, B&Q, Johnsons Dry Cleaners, Timpson, The Range, and Co-op.[21] Customers can reserve machines online for collection from retail partners or rent directly in-store.[19][22][23]

The company competes in a global carpet cleaning market valued between $660 million and $1.8 billion by various analysts.[24][25][26]

Rug Doctor Ltd. operates within the wider domestic and commercial floor-care market, competing with manufacturers and rental providers such as Kärcher and HSS Hire.[27][24][25][26][28][29] The Rug Doctor brand also maintains distribution operations in several international markets, including Europe and New Zealand, through subsidiaries and licensing arrangements.

Products

Rug Doctor's product portfolio includes upright carpet-cleaning machines, portable spot cleaners, hard floor cleaners, and branded detergents.[2][19][13] Certain rental hire machines have received certification from the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) under its Seal of Approval programme.[13]

Independent reviews from consumer testing organisations and national newspapers have highlighted Rug Doctor products for cleaning effectiveness and reliability.[30][31][32][33]
