Reflectionism
The artistic forms and paintings produced through the optical refraction of light rays upon a colored surface are classified within the Reflectionism (Latin: riflessione) style. Distinct from other established formal languages, Reflectionism (Latin: riflessionismo) manifests through the refractive qualities of natural light interacting with the painted surface, facilitated by brushstrokes that adhere to the inherent structural logic of the form, rather than depicting subjects via the conventional light-shadow paradigm.
Despite its visual resemblance to monochrome painting, Reflectionism does not aspire to establish a purely singular-color surface. Rather, it is focused on the relativity of light and shadow, as well as the perception of spatial and temporal dimensions through the dynamic interplay of light and shadow across the painted surface. Portraits, figures, and objects represented in this style can be perceived in varying states of light and shadow contingent upon the observer's perspective. Alterations in the positioning of the light source can subsequently modify the perceived expression, distribution of light, and configuration of shadows inherent to the painting. In this regard, Reflectionism represents a distinct methodology for image construction predicated upon the relativity of light within the contexts of space and time. Depending on the vantage point, areas of illumination may be interpreted as shadow and conversely, shadowed areas may be perceived as illuminated, resulting in corresponding variations in expression within portraiture.
A monochromatic surface devoid of additional modulation allows natural light to play a descriptive role within the painting. The orientation of the brushstrokes is designed to direct incoming light rays; thus, brushstrokes serve not solely as expressive components but, more importantly, as descriptive instruments. Due to the diverse orientations of the brushstrokes, the reflected light engenders effects of light, shadow, half-shadow, and reflexive qualities. Consequently, this relativity of light and shadow permits observers to witness differing visual effects based on their position relative to the artwork.
Although light bending is characterized in optical terms as refraction (termed Refractionism), the artistic notion formulated within this approach is recognized as Reflectionism. In this style, brushstrokes and their orientation act as direct descriptive tools. The objective is not to create color relief but to arrange brushstrokes in such a manner that allows light itself to emerge as a formative element. Brushstrokes oriented in various directions across the color surface may modulate the intensity of incoming light rays, transforming their interactions into dynamic visual constructs within the color spectrum.
