Red Cedar Chamber Music is an American chamber music organization based in Eastern Iowa. Founded in 1997, the organization presents concert performances, educational outreach programs, and commissions new chamber music works. Its recordings and performances have received coverage in national and international music publications, including American Record Guide, Gramophone, and publications of Chamber Music America and the National Endowment for the Arts.[1][2]
History
Red Cedar Chamber Music was founded in 1997 by flutist Jan Boland and guitarist John Dowdall.[3] Prior to establishing the organization, both musicians had professional careers specializing in early nineteenth-century repertoire for flute and guitar, including performances on period instruments.[4]
The organization was incorporated as a nonprofit in Iowa in 1998 and began presenting concert series and educational programming in Eastern Iowa. Boland and Dowdall served as the organization's artistic leadership until 2016, when leadership transitioned to violinist Miera Kim and cellist Carey Bostian following a planned overlap period.[5][6]
Programming and activities
Red Cedar Chamber Music presents an annual concert series featuring its core ensemble and invited guest artists. Programming has included performances of early music on period instruments as well as contemporary chamber works, including newly commissioned compositions.[7]
The organization also conducts educational and outreach programs in schools, senior centers, and rural communities throughout Iowa. These programs have been supported by grants from arts organizations, including repeated funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.[8][9]
Commissioning and contemporary music
Since its founding, Red Cedar Chamber Music has commissioned numerous chamber music works for a variety of instrumental combinations. Between 1997 and 2016, the organization commissioned and premiered approximately 50 new works, with additional commissions continuing under subsequent leadership.[10]
Several commissioned works and arrangements associated with the organization have received recognition from professional music organizations, including awards from the National Flute Association's Newly Published Music competitions.[11][12] Red Cedar Chamber Music's named composers-in-residence have included Jerry M. Owen, Andrew Earle Simpson, Harvey Sollberger, Michael Gilbertson, Stephen Cohn and Michael Kimber.
Collaborations
Red Cedar Chamber Music has undertaken collaborative projects with regional, national, and international arts institutions. One early collaboration involved performances using historical flutes and guitars from the Musical Instrument Division of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, presented in partnership with the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art.[13][14]
The organization has also participated in projects connected to Czech musical heritage, including performances and recordings related to the legacy of composer Antonín Dvořák and collaborations with Czech musicians, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Washington D.C. and National Museum (Prague).[15][16]
Reception and recognition
The organization's educational initiatives have also received recognition, including a Residency Partnership Program grant from Chamber Music America in 2007.[17][18] Red Cedar Chamber Music has additionally received repeated grant support from the National Endowment for the Arts for rural and educational programming.[19]
Discography
During its first two decades, Red Cedar Chamber Music's core ensemble—flutist Jan Boland and guitarist John Dowdall—collaborated with guest artists to record a series of commercially released compact discs on the Fleur de Son Classics, Titanic Records, and Koch International labels.[20] The ensemble's recordings include both period-instrument performances of nineteenth-century repertoire and contemporary works, including commissioned compositions. Scholarly research has noted that recordings of early nineteenth-century flute and guitar repertoire were relatively uncommon in the commercial market at the time and attracted critical interest among classical listeners.[21]
Recordings and performances associated with Red Cedar Chamber Music have received coverage in national and international music publications. American Record Guide named the recording Czech Chamber Music a "Critics' Choice" in 1998,[22] and the German publication Alte Musik Aktuell selected recordings featuring the ensemble's repertoire as "Disc of the Month."[23]
