Prabhash Chandra
Prabhash Chandra.[1] is an award-winning Indian filmmaker known for his feature films I’m Not the River Jhelum (2022)[2] and Alaav (2024)[3]. His work has been screened at major film festivals including the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK)[4] and has been reviewed by publications such as The Hindu[5], The Indian Express[6], and The Wire[7].
Early life and background
Prabhash Chandra was born in India.[8] Before entering filmmaking, he studied science and later transitioned to cinema, working across theatre and independent film.[9] His background and lived experiences have significantly influenced the thematic concerns of his films, which often engage with memory, displacement, caregiving, and political landscapes.[10]
Career
I’m Not the River Jhelum (2022)[11] His debut feature depicts life in Kashmir following the revocation of Article 370. The Indian Express described how the film is shaped by his experiences in Pulwama and Srinagar and explores everyday life amid conflict.[12] The film won the K.R. Mohanan Award for Best Debut Director from India at the International Film Festival of Kerala in 2022.[13]
Alaav (2024)[14] His second feature, Alaav, focuses on caregiving, ageing, and emotional labour within a mother–son relationship. The film was screened at the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK)[15] and reviewed by The Hindu[16], which noted its empathetic portrayal of caregiving. The Wire[17] described the film as a probing exploration of the “selfless limbo of caregiving,” highlighting its minimalistic and compassionate storytelling.
Style and themes
Chandra’s films are characterised by a quiet, meditative style and a focus on ordinary lives shaped by political and emotional realities. Critics[18] have noted his use of long takes, minimal dialogue, and non-melodramatic narration to explore themes such as displacement, memory, ageing, and ethical responsibility[19]
Reception
Chandra’s work has received critical attention for its humanistic approach and resistance to spectacle[20]. Reviews in national publications have positioned his films within contemporary Indian independent cinema[21], particularly for their engagement with social and political realities through intimate storytelling.
