Draft:Port Blocker

A Port Blocker is a vital computer security component[1] that blocks and prevents open computer ports from being used to compromise laptop, desktop, servers and other computer equipment.

Problem

BadUSB enabled memory sticks can be plugged into a computer's USB port for a few seconds to launch payloads like capturing confidential data, inserting malware, or otherwise preventing normal operation, even when the computer is not connected to a network.[2] Port Blockers can prevent these consequences and juice jacking attacks. They can also provide tamper-evidence that this has been attempted.

Types

Permanent

These are intended to block ports indefinitely and offer tamper-evidence should their removal have been attempted.

Removable with Extraction Key

Pot Blockers installed in Laptop with Extraction Key

  • Network port RJ45[3]
  • Media output, including: HDMi, serial and parallel ports.

Cable Locking

These prevent denial-of-service either intentionally or accidentally (e.g. when moving servers).Typically these can be unlocked with an extraction key, to allow cables to be disconnected.

All these types of port blockers are computer hardware protection mechanisms.
