PionerasDev (also known as Pioneras Developers) is a Colombian non-profit organization founded in Medellín in 2016.[1] Its mission is to empower women without access to quality technology education through free events, bootcamps, skills-based mentorships, and open knowledge sharing in programming, design, software, and other STEM disciplines.[2] The community welcomes women from diverse professional backgrounds, including those studying technology for the first time, career changers, and women returning to the workforce.
In 2020, PionerasDev became the first organization in Latin America to receive IBM's Open Source Community Grant, an international award recognizing non-profit initiatives focused on education and inclusion in open-source technology.[3]
History
PionerasDev was co-founded in Medellín, Colombia, in 2016 by Marian Villa, a graphic designer and communications professional with an interest in technology.[4] The organization began as a small group of five women focused on learning Node.js and JavaScript through self-organized meetups and peer-to-peer teaching.[3][5]
The initiative expanded beyond Medellín to Cali and Barranquilla in 2018, and continued growing in subsequent years.[5] By 2020, PionerasDev had grown from its original five founding members to more than 1,200 participants across Colombia.[1][3]
In July 2020, IBM awarded PionerasDev its Open Source Community Grant — the third edition of the award — making PionerasDev the first Latin American organization to receive this recognition.[6] The grant consisted of US$25,000 in cash and US$25,000 in IBM Cloud technology, for a total value of US$50,000.[1] The award was selected through a vote by IBM's global internal open-source community.[6] IBM cited PionerasDev's commitment to increasing women's participation in programming and open-source development as the basis for the recognition.[1]
In October 2023, PionerasDev held its first conference, PionerasConf 2023, a three-day event hosted across three venues in Medellín: Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, Universidad EAFIT, and Ruta N.[7] The event brought together over 725 attendees for workshops, technical talks, keynotes, and networking sessions focused on STEAM, diversity, and inclusion.[7] A symbolic ticket fee was charged to fund accessibility services, including on-site childcare for attending mothers, personal hygiene supplies, and two Colombian Sign Language interpreters present throughout all sessions.[7] A follow-up virtual edition, PionerasConf Extended 2023, was held on November 19, 2023, connecting participants from nine countries and five Colombian cities at no cost.[7]
Mission and activities
PionerasDev describes its mission as reducing the gender gap in technology careers and increasing the number of women in STEM fields, with a particular focus on young women and female heads of household between the ages of 14 and 28.[2] Over 80 percent of its membership comes from lower-income communities in Colombia.[1][3]
The organization runs free monthly events including meetups, workshops, and bootcamps for women at all levels, from complete beginners to experienced professionals seeking to update their skills.[5] While approximately 75 percent of its programming is focused on JavaScript, PionerasDev also offers content in other languages and technologies, including Python and CSS.[3] The organization also operates a skills-based volunteer network and a mentorship program that connects women learners with more experienced practitioners.[8]
The community operates on a peer-to-peer learning model, in which more experienced members teach newcomers, who in turn take on volunteer and leadership roles as they progress.[4]
Nodes
PionerasDev operates through six active local chapters, known as nodos (nodes), located across the main cities of Colombia: Medellín, Bogotá, Barranquilla, Bucaramanga, Cali, and Cartagena.[9] Each node organizes its own local events and is coordinated by volunteer teams.[9]
Recognition
PionerasDev has been recognized by IBM as a leading initiative in open-source education for women in Latin America, and was the first organization in the region to receive the IBM Open Source Community Grant.[1][6] The organization has also been featured by the OpenJS Foundation[5] and recognized by Global STEM Women as a model initiative for gender inclusion in technology.[8] Its work has been covered by national Colombian media outlets including El Espectador, El Colombiano, and Noticias RCN.[3][4][6]
