Perliks, born Abdulrasaq Adebayo Babalola, is a Nigerian music video director, photographer, and visual artist based in Lagos. He has directed music videos for Afrobeats artists including Rema, Blaqbonez, Adekunle Gold, Burna Boy, Kizz Daniel, and Shallipopi.[1][2] He received nominations for The Headies Award for Best Music Video at the 16th and 17th editions of The Headies.[3][4] In 2021, his environmental art installation the Plastic Angel received international coverage from outlets including WION, CBC, and BellaNaija.[5][6][7]

Early life and background

Perliks was born Abdulrasaq Adebayo Babalola in Lagos State, Nigeria. He is the son of Tajudeen Babalola Ojora, known professionally as Telemoon, a veteran music video director who worked in the Nigerian Fuji music industry, directing videos for artists including Wasiu Ayinde (K1 De Ultimate), Pasuma, Saheed Osupa, and others.[1]

Despite his father's established presence in the industry, Perliks built his career independently without relying on his family name. He began learning video editing at his father's production house in Mushin, Lagos, editing Fuji music performances before transitioning into photography.[1]

Career

Beginnings

Perliks began his creative career around 2012, initially directing short videos for friends and experimenting with photography. He developed a technique he described as being an "editor of photography", taking stills from live Fuji performance videos and editing them into stylised images.[1]

His first official music video was "Money Anthem" by Macjreyz, an artist signed to Mr Eazi's talent development initiative EmPawa Africa, in 2020. The video was produced on a minimal budget; music video producer Femi Dapson, who co-produced it, later recalled that the total production cost was 800,000 naira, compared to a typical baseline of around 6 million naira for a basic music video at the time.[8] Following its release, Perliks began receiving commissions from other artists, and his career in music video direction grew rapidly.[1]

Rise to prominence

Perliks rose to prominence directing music videos for major Afrobeats artists. Afrocritik published a dedicated profile in November 2025 examining his approach to visual storytelling and his philosophy that a music video is "95% about the artiste and only 5% about the director".[1] A separate Afrocritik profile of producer Femi Dapson, published in July 2025, independently referenced Perliks and his role in early music video projects.[8]

Perliks directed the music video for Blaqbonez's "Back in Uni" (2022), co-directed with another filmmaker. The video, which required Blaqbonez to portray multiple real Nigerian music industry figures, was nominated for The Headies Award for Best Music Video at the 16th Headies Awards.[3]

At the 17th Headies Awards in 2025, he received two further nominations in the Best Music Video category: one for Rema's "Charm" (co-directed with Folarin Oludare) and one for Blaqbonez's "Like Ice Spice" (co-directed with Emeka Shine Shine).[4]

Pulse Nigeria, one of Nigeria's most widely read entertainment outlets, included two videos directed by Perliks in its list of the top ten favourite Nigerian music videos of 2025. These were "Many People" by Adekunle Gold and "Laho" by Shallipopi, with editorial commentary on each video's cultural significance.[2] Afrocritik's roundup of the best Nigerian music videos of 2024 highlighted his direction of Simi and Falz's "Borrow Me Your Baby".[9]

Plastic Angel Project

In 2021, Perliks created the Plastic Angel, an environmental art installation designed to raise awareness about plastic pollution in Nigeria. Working with over 100 volunteers, he gathered, washed, and sorted more than 5,000 pieces of discarded plastic waste, transforming them into large angel wings and public murals. The central figure depicted an angel wearing an oxygen mask, representing the harm caused by plastic pollution, while decorative lights symbolised plastic's utility.[5][6][7]

The project was covered by international outlets independently of the subject. WION, the Indian international news broadcaster, reported on the installation in November 2021, describing Babalola as directing a team constructing an angel figure from recycled plastic waste to draw attention to environmental harm in Nigeria.[5] CBC, the Canadian public broadcaster, covered the project, noting that Babalola had gathered 5,000 plastic bottles around Lagos to stimulate discussion about plastic pollution.[6] BellaNaija, Nigeria's leading independent digital publication, featured the project and Babalola's environmental message in January 2022.[7]

The Plastic Angel project and his subsequent music video career together reflect a consistent visual practice. The same independent creative approach visible in the Plastic Angel has been noted by critics as central to his music video work as well.[1]
