PH5
PH5 is a fashion label established in 2014 in New York City. It was founded by Wei Lin and focuses on knitwear design and development..[1] The brand has been described as combining textile manufacturing techniques with contemporary fashion design.[2]
The name "PH5" refers to the scientific pH scale and is used by the company to represent a balance between traditionally feminine design with an androgynous edge.[3]
History
PH5 was founded in 2014 by Wei Lin, a former business consultant whose family background is in knitwear manufacturing in Dongguan, China[4]. Lin brought on board Parsons graduate Mijia Zhang to lead the creative side. The company’s access to manufacturing facilities enabled experimentation with knitwear techniques and materials.[5]
PH5 presented its first runway collection at New York Fashion Week for the Spring 2017 season.[6] The brand was later named a finalist for the inaugural Business of Fashion China Prize and was nominated for the 2017 International Woolmark Prize.[7][8]
Australian designer Zoe Champion later joined PH5 and presented collections for the brand, beginning with Spring/Summer 2021, which drew on themes related to the 2019–20 Australian bushfire season.[9]
Design
PH5 focuses on knitwear and has been noted for experimenting with textile techniques and materials.[3] The brand has also developed an activewear line, PH5+, incorporating knitwear construction methods.[10]
The company has explored sustainability-related initiatives, including the use of established frameworks to assess its environmental impact.[11] Some collections have incorporated environmental themes.[12]
PH5 collaborated with Mini & Woolmark in 2018[13], with Girls Who Code at NYFW in 2018[14], Sophia (robot) in 2018[15], Kith (brand) in 2019[16], and Charles & Keith in 2025[17][18]
Manufacturing
PH5 produces its garments in China and has emphasized its manufacturing connections in Dongguan.[1][5] Coverage in Forbes has described the company’s production facilities as supporting technical experimentation in knitwear design.[1]
