OpenSN@P is a fan-led software preservation project intended to restore online functionality for video games that used the SN@P online service on the PlayStation 2. The project focuses on allowing compatible games and original hardware to communicate with replacement server infrastructure while preserving behaviour close to the original online experience.
The initial focus of OpenSN@P is the North American release of Resident Evil Outbreak, followed by planned support for Resident Evil Outbreak File #2, Monster Hunter, and other SN@P-compatible titles.
Background
SN@P was an online service used by some PlayStation 2 titles for network authentication, account handling, lobby features, and multiplayer-related services. Following the shutdown of the original infrastructure, games that relied on SN@P lost official online functionality.
OpenSN@P was created as a fan preservation effort to study the original network behaviour and provide compatible replacement services for supported games. The project aims to support original PlayStation 2 consoles, emulators such as PCSX2, and compatible PlayStation 3 systems where technically possible.
Goals
The stated goal of OpenSN@P is to bring SN@P-compatible games back online in a way that is clean, respectful, secure, and close to the original user experience.
The project has several technical goals:
- restore online access for SN@P-compatible PlayStation 2 games;
- avoid requiring modified game discs or modified ISO images;
- support original hardware where possible;
- provide account registration and recovery through a modern web interface;
- improve security around account login and password handling;
- provide tools for generating compatible memory card configuration data;
- document the behaviour of SN@P-compatible games for preservation purposes.
Development
Development has focused first on Resident Evil Outbreak. Work on the project has included authentication, lobby communication, chat functionality, memory card configuration, and server-side handling of multiplayer session data.
The project has also investigated the security limitations of the original login flow. OpenSN@P plans to use a modern account system for registration and recovery, while maintaining compatibility with the original PlayStation 2 client behaviour.
Website and services
The planned OpenSN@P website is expected to provide user registration, account recovery, game-specific support pages, guides, forums, and memory card utility tools. The project does not intend to use account email addresses for marketing purposes, with email used only for account security and recovery.
Preservation approach
OpenSN@P is intended as a compatibility and preservation project rather than a replacement game distribution service. The project does not aim to distribute copyrighted game files, modified ISOs, or proprietary assets. Users are expected to use their own original game copies and hardware or legally configured emulation environments.
