openKERNEL is a software organization focused on the development of free and open-source software.[citation needed] The organization is maintained by a company known as infastracture.[citation needed] One of its announced projects is openONE, an upcoming Unix-like operating system kernel currently under development.[citation needed]
Overview
openKERNEL is described as focusing on experimental approaches to operating system development, particularly in the area of kernel design.[citation needed] According to project descriptions, openONE emphasizes initramfs-centric system initialization, alternative data and memory management strategies, and expanded filesystem handling.[citation needed]
History
openKERNEL was launched on 30 January 2026 by the BIOS-focused company infastracture.[citation needed] The organization was announced as an effort to explore operating system kernel architectures distinct from established platforms such as Linux and Windows.[citation needed]
The first kernel project associated with the organization was openkernelONE, later referred to as openONE.[citation needed] As of its initial announcement, the kernel remains under active development.[citation needed]
