Norbert Bánhalmi (born 14 May 1979) is a Hungarian photographer and visual artist based in Vienna, Austria.[1] He works in portraiture, documentary photography, and exhibition photography. He has won the Turul Prize for Photography five times (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025),[2] one of Hungary's foremost photographic awards.

Biography

Bánhalmi was born in Budapest in 1979. He graduated in computer engineering from Gábor Dénes College in 2005.[1] In 2015 he obtained a photography qualification from the New York Institute of Photography, and completed further training in applied photography in Budapest in 2018.[1] He subsequently relocated to Vienna, Austria.

Work

Exhibitions

In 2015, Bánhalmi held the exhibition A Nő ötven árnyalata (Fifty Shades of Woman) in Budapest.[3]

In 2016, his portrait photography featured in Mérföldkövek (Milestones), an exhibition at the Hungarian House in New York commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.[4][5]

Between 2017 and 2018, Bánhalmi produced Ébredés (Awakening), a series of portraits of women living with or recovering from cancer, which toured several venues including the oncology department of Csolnoky Ferenc Hospital in Veszprém.[6][7] The project was also published as a book co-authored with Erika Elek (2017).

In 2021, he presented The Frame, a digital art exhibition at Rege Gallery in the Tihany Abbey, produced in collaboration with Samsung and with Olympus support.[8][9]

The Austrian public broadcaster ORF (ORF Volksgruppen) reported on Bánhalmi's work twice in 2025: once covering a community charity portrait project,[10] and once on the anniversary exhibition of VIPACH (Vienna Photo Art & Creative Hub), the Hungarian-diaspora photographers' association he belongs to.[11]

The Hungarian photography magazine Záridő published a three-part profile interview in 2021.[12][13][14] The women's magazine Kiskegyed profiled his return to photography after a serious accident.[15]

Brand representation

From 2021, Bánhalmi served as brand ambassador for Olympus (later rebranded as OM System) in Hungary, running workshops, managing community photography platforms, and representing the brand at public events.[9]

Awards

Bánhalmi has received the Turul Prize for Photography (Hungarian: Turul Fotográfiai Díj) in five consecutive years: 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025.[2] The prize is awarded annually by the Hungarian photography community for outstanding photographic achievement.
