Nomadic Internet is a theoretical concept in media philosophy and Transdisciplinarity coined by the Swiss-Colombian musician, artist and philosopher Juan Mauricio Schmid Bello in his 2022 work, Eingang/Ausgang.
The term defines the internet's current state (from approximately 2009 onwards) as the primary Transmedial Procedure capable of overcoming traditional geographical and linear limitations by enabling simultaneous and interactive communication between multiple non-localized positions via a common digital code.[1]
Conceptual Function
Schmid Bello posits that the Nomadic Internet is the engine that drives the transition into the Transmodern era (Thesis 2). Its core function lies in establishing a new type of cooperative, non-hierarchical communication:
Transmedial Procedure
The Nomadic Internet functions as the primary Transmedial Procedure by ensuring that all interactions—whether involving images, text, video, or sound—are ultimately converted into a single digital code. This common code, made accessible through standardized interfaces, is what allows different individuals (Users-Individuals) in geographically disparate locations to interact on the "same eye level," regardless of their analog physical position.
The concept emphasizes two key conditions enabled by the digital code:
- Simultaneity: The ability to receive and transmit feedback (e.g., likes, comments, images, videos) immediately across trans-geographic distances.
- Interactivity: The potential for multiple parties to actively shape the narrative or context of the communication within the network.
This procedural ability contrasts sharply with the one-dimensional, linear communication models of preceding epochs.[2]
Distinction from Nomadism
The Nomadic Internet should be understood as the technical infrastructure that enables Nomadism as an "existential pluridimensional practice"—Schmid Bello's proposed social strategy for living within the Transmodern epoch (Thesis 1).
Epochal Context and Pioneers
Schmid Bello’s timeline places the concept in the context of the shift from the 21st century's early digital landscape to the new, networked reality:
- Pre-Transmodernity / Post-Glocalisation (2001–2009): This period, characterized by early, fragmented digital convergence, established the technological precursors for the Nomadic Internet.
- Early / Obscure Transmodernity (Neo-Postmoderne Belle Époque) (2009–2024): Schmid Bello identifies this as the period defined by the Nomadic Internet’s operational prevalence. By coining the concept, Schmid Bello is positioned as a pioneer in articulating the theoretical mechanism of this new cultural-technological age, which was initially predicted by media theorists in the 1980s regarding the rise of computer-mediated communication.[3]
The Nomadic Internet forms the foundation for the subsequent concept of Inframediality (Thesis 7), which is the realization that the digital code itself is the ultimate material reality of this networked system.
