The idea of establishing a franchise-based Twenty20 competition in New Zealand emerged during the mid-2020s as New Zealand Cricket (NZC) explored ways to strengthen the country's domestic game amid the rapid growth of franchise cricket worldwide. The increasing popularity and financial success of leagues such as the Indian Premier League (IPL), Big Bash League (BBL), SA20, and Major League Cricket prompted NZC to review the long-term future of the Super Smash, New Zealand's domestic T20 competition.

In 2025, NZC began consulting with the country's six Major Associations, commercial partners, broadcasters, and international investors regarding the creation of a new franchise league. Several models were considered, including retaining the existing domestic structure and introducing privately owned franchises. The review concluded that a franchise competition offered the greatest potential for increasing commercial revenue, attracting overseas investment, improving player retention, and expanding the international profile of New Zealand cricket.

On 23 March 2026, the NZC Board announced that a new franchise competition, provisionally known as NZ20, had been selected as its preferred model for the future of domestic Twenty20 cricket. The proposal included separate men's and women's competitions and a transition away from the Super Smash following the completion of the 2026–27 season.

The inaugural season was initially planned for January 2027. However, on 11 May 2026, New Zealand Cricket announced that the launch had been postponed until the 2027–28 season. NZC stated that the additional time would allow the completion of franchise licensing, investment agreements, governance arrangements, scheduling, and commercial partnerships before the competition's debut.

As of 2026, the league remains under development, with details regarding participating franchises, tournament format, player acquisition, broadcasting rights, and commercial partners yet to be officially announced. Super Smash will continue to serve as New Zealand's premier domestic Twenty20 competition until NZ20 is launched.
