the metric system is a base ten measuring system with the prefixes: kilo nano centi milli .etc , some have no prefixes there is only one with no prefix per type of measurement (liter,meter and gram)
the prefix kilo is 1000 so the kilometer is 1000 meters ,centi means 1/10(0.1) so there are 10 centimeters in one meter
milli is 1/100 so 10 millimeters in a centimeter and 100 millimeters in a meter the prefixes also apply to grams and liters.
