Basic Info and Background
Full name: Alvin Francis Poussaint Date of Birth: May 15, 1934 - February 24, 2025 Place of Birth: East Harlem, New York City. Parent Place of Birth: Haiti
Education and Early career
Dr. Francis Poussaint graduated from Stuyvesant High School located in New York City. He then earned his bachelor's degree in pharmacology from Columbia University in 1956. After graduating from Columbia he soon recieved his M.D from Cornell University Medical college in 1960. It was reported that he was the only Black student in his class. He specialized in psychiatry and completed his residency at the neuropsychiatric instuitue of University of California (UCLA) where he served as chief resident from 1964 to 1965.
Institutional Impact
In 1969, Dr. Poussaint joined Harvard Medical School as Associate Dean for student Affairs and as a Psychiatry faculty member.
He is responsible with recruiting and mentoring about 1,400 students of color. He is responsible for helpening the broadening medical school access for underrepresented communities
Dr. Poussaint also created a supplemental educational program that is to support minority students and to help assist roeduce health disparities and improve representation in medicine
Civil Rights Work and Activism
In 1965, during the civil rights movement, Dr. Poussaint became Southern Field Director of the Medical Committee for Human Rights. He provided medical care to civil rights workers, and worked toward desegregating hospitals and health facilities across the South.
Legacy and Awards
In 2010 he received the Herbert W. Nickens Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges for his contribution to promoting justice and equality in medical education and health care.
Research, Writing and Media
Poussaints work focused mainly on mental health in African American communites. He authored and co authored serval books such as, Why Blacks Kills Black which is explaining how racism and social circumstances contribute to violence in Black communities, Raising Black Children which focused on parenting in Black families,Lay my Burden Down: Suicide and the Mental Health Crisis Among African - American which fouces on mental health challenges, suicide risk and social pressures. In addition, Poussaint advised TV shows to make sure accurate and diverse of Black life on screen.
