Matthew Key is an Australian politician, and has represented the district of Mount Gambier in the South Australian House of Assembly since the 2026 state election. Key is a member of the Australian Labor Party, and is the first Labor MP to represent Mount Gambier since 1975. Prior to his election, Key was a schoolteacher and a trade unionist.

Career

Key is a secondary school teacher who teaches English, and worked as the deputy principal at Mulga Street Primary School as of 2025.[2] Key stood in 2023 to become the president of the Australian Education Union's South Australian branch, but lost to Jennie-Marie Gorman.[2][3]

Key was announced as the Labor candidate for the district of Mount Gambier for the 2026 state election in December 2025.[2][4] Key has campaigned on promised investments by the Malinauskas government, including proposals for a new technical college and forestry centre in Mount Gambier.[5] In an opinion poll for Mount Gambier conducted by UComms in January 2026, Key polled in second place with 23.2% of the primary vote, behind independent Travis Fatchen.[6][b] Key was successfully elected at the state election, becoming the MP for Mount Gambier. He is the first Labor MP for Mount Gambier since 1975.[5]

Personal life

Key is the nephew of Steph Key, a former Labor minister in South Australia.[5]

Notes

  1. ^ Troy Bell, the previous MP for Mount Gambier, resigned from the House of Assembly on 2 September 2025. Due to the proximity to the state election, no by-election was held.[1]
  2. ^ Undecided voters are excluded from this calculation. With undecided voters included, Key polled 17.7% of the primary vote.[6]
