Marco Gilli is an Italian engineer, academic and senior executive, born in Turin on 11 July 1965.

His career spans academia, scientific diplomacy and the leadership of major public and institutional organisations.

A full professor of electrical engineering, his research focuses on non-linear systems and machine learning, and since 2019 he has been listed in Stanford University’s ranking of researchers with the highest scientific impact.

From 2012 to 2018, he served as Rector of the Polytechnic University of Turin, where he championed research internationalisation and strengthened ties with industry.

Between 2019 and 2024, he was Scientific Attaché at the Italian Embassy in Washington, overseeing cooperation between Italy and the United States in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.

Since 16 April 2024, he has been Chair of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, one of Europe’s leading philanthropic institutions.

He also serves as Vice-Chair of ACRI and as Chair of the Support Committee for Minority Shareholders of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti.

Education and training

He earned a degree in electronic engineering from the Polytechnic University of Turin in 1990, graduating as the top student in his class and receiving the Andreoni Award. He began his academic career at the same institution as a researcher in electrical engineering, a position he held from 15 November 1991, to 30 October 1998.

Career

Academic career and international collaborations

In November 1998, he was appointed associate professor and, in October 2000, promoted to full professor of electrical engineering at the Polytechnic University of Turin. Over the course of his career, he has undertaken extensive research stays abroad:

  • Scholar Visitor: University of California, Berkeley (April 1992 and May 1993) and at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (September 1994, September 1996, and November 1998).
  • Visiting Professor: Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University) on an annual basis from 1999 to 2006, and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences from 2002 to 2007.

Within the Polytechnic University of Turin, he has also held a number of senior leadership roles:

  • Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering from 2002 to 2005, with responsibility for second-level education, including master’s programmes and doctoral studies, since 2003.
  • Vice Rector (2005-2012), overseeing Internal Affairs.

Rectorship (2012-2018)

From 16 March 2012 to 14 March 2018, he served as Rector of the Polytechnic University of Turin, succeeding Francesco Profumo, under whom he had previously been Vice Rector.

At the time of his appointment, he was the youngest rector in office in Italy and the second youngest in the history of the Polytechnic University, after Gustavo Colonnetti.

During his tenure, he led a far-reaching reorganisation of the university’s research system through the establishment of eleven interdepartmental centres, inspired by the models of MIT and the University of California, Berkeley, focused on:

  • Digital Transformation: Big Data, Machine Learning and Advanced Computing.
  • Industry and Health: Additive Manufacturing, Health Robotics and Technologies.
  • Sustainability: Energy transition and sustainable mobility.

Under his leadership, the Polytechnic University of Turin signed more than 100 international agreements and developed strategic partnerships with around 40 major companies, among them FCA, GM, GE, ENEL, ENI, TERNA, EDF, State Grid China, ST, IBM, and Cisco. From 2013 to 2014, he also served as Chair of CESAER (the Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research).

Scientific diplomacy and institutional roles

From 15 July 2019 to 31 July, 2024, he served as Science and Technology Counsellor at the Italian Embassy in Washington. In this capacity, he oversaw cooperation in applied sciences and emerging technologies, with a particular focus on Big Data, IoT, Machine Learning, AI, Robotics, Quantum Technologies, Advanced Manufacturing, Self-Driving Vehicles, and the Energy Transition.

Chairmanship of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo

Since 16 April 2024, he has served as Chair of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo,

overseeing its strategic direction, philanthropic activities and asset management. He also holds several key system-level roles:

  • Chair of the Council of Banking Foundations of Piedmont and Liguria (since May 28, 2024).
  • Chair of the Support Committee for Minority Shareholders of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (since July 26, 2024).
  • Vice-Chair of ACRI (Association of Foundations and Savings Banks) since 29 April 2025.

His research focuses on the theory and applications of electrical networks and non-linear systems, neural networks, machine learning, and electromagnetics. He is the author or co-author of over 200 publications in scientific journals or international conference proceedings.

Marco Gilli is married with two children.
