Proposed 2025 update for Maptek (COI disclosure)

Disclosure: I am an employee of Maptek. To maintain transparency and align with Wikipedia’s conflict of interest guidelines, I am posting my proposed update here for community feedback and independent review. All information is supported by reliable, independent sources, cited below. Feedback or assistance from regular editors is welcome and appreciated.

This draft proposes a full update to the Maptek article, bringing its history, product list, and global presence up to date with independent sources. The current article is out of date and very short. I propose replacing the current article text in full with the following draft.

Maptek

Maptek Pty Ltd is a private Australian technology company specialising in software, hardware and services primarily for the global mining industry. Headquartered in Adelaide, South Australia, Maptek provides solutions across the mining lifecycle, including exploration, resource modelling, mine planning, operations, and rehabilitation.[1]. Its flagship products include Vulcan, a geological modelling and mine planning software, and PointStudio, a point cloud processing and analysis tool. As of 2025, Maptek supports over 30,000 users at more than 2,500 sites in 95 countries[2].

History

Maptek was founded in 1981 by geologist Dr. Bob Johnson in Sydney, Australia, under the name K. Robert Johnson & Associates and initially offered geological database and plotting services. In 1992, it rebranded as Maptek and relocated its headquarters to Adelaide[3]. The company's first major software release, Vulcan, debuted in 1984, marking one of the earliest 3D mine planning tools in the industry[4].

Maptek entered the laser scanning market in 2003[5] with Australian-built laser survey and digital imaging hardware. In 2013, Maptek launched Sentry[6], a stability monitoring and risk management system. The company’s product portfolio expanded with the release of BlastLogic in 2011[7], Evolution scheduling software in 2015[8], and DomainMCF, a machine learning-based resource modelling tool, in 2021[9].

Products and technology

Maptek develops integrated software and hardware solutions designed primarily for the mining industry, supporting the entire mining value chain—from exploration and resource modelling to mine planning, operations, and rehabilitation. Its capabilities in modelling, spatial analysis, geospatial data processing, and automation have seen adoption in other sectors such as civil engineering[10], construction, and environmental management[11].

  • Vulcan: geological modelling and mine planning software used for tasks such as mine design, scheduling, and geotechnical analysis[12].
  • PointStudio: point cloud processing and modelling software for mining, civil, geological, and surveying applications[13].
  • BlastLogic: operational management system that streamlines tasks and processes in open-cut drill and blast operations to improve mineral recovery[14].
  • Evolution: strategic mine planning software for short- and long-term planning and optimisation[15].
  • Sentry: surface stability monitoring system that combines laser scan data with software to track and analyse movement over time[16].
  • DomainMCF: machine learning-based modelling that enables rapid resource model generation directly from drillhole data[17].
  • GeologyCore: geological modelling solution that simplifies data validation, interpretation, and model building, and supports cross-functional workflows[18].
  • VisionV2X: proximity awareness solution providing visible and audible feedback regarding the proximity of at-risk personnel and vehicles in GPS-denied environments[19].
  • Vestrex: a platform that centrally connects various data sources, mining processes, and system outputs, facilitating efficient data management and decision-making[20].

Global presence

Maptek operates 16 offices worldwide, supporting a global client base across 95 countries[21][22].

  • Australia: Adelaide (Headquarters), Brisbane, Newcastle, Perth, Sydney
  • North America: Denver and Elko (USA), Vancouver and Montréal (Canada)
  • South America: Belo Horizonte (Brazil), Viña del Mar (Chile), Mexico City and Hermosillo (Mexico), Lima (Peru)
  • Africa: Johannesburg (South Africa)
  • Europe: Edinburgh (United Kingdom)

As of 2025, Maptek employs approximately 440 staff across these locations[23].

Leadership

In 2020, Eduardo Coloma was appointed as CEO, and has overseen adoption of machine learning and cloud computing technologies in the company’s product portfolio[24]
