Draft:Magnetic Association
The Magnetic Society (german: Magnetische Verein, also known as the Göttingen Magnetic Society), founded in the 1830s, was a research society based in Göttingen. Its main purpose was a worldwide geophysical research project to investigate the temporal and spatial changes in Earth 's magnetism. It is considered the first international Scientific society.
The association was founded by the Göttingen professors Carl Friedrich Gauss and Wilhelm Weber with the support of Alexander von Humboldt. Its aim was to measure the fluctuations of the Earth's magnetic field in a coordinated manner using numerous measuring stations distributed around the world.
Measurements were taken over a six-year period from 1836 to 1841 on 28 fixed dates, each lasting 24 hours at five-minute intervals. Up to 50 observatories participated in this project, including 35 in Europe, six in Asia, two in Africa, three in North America, and four in the South Pacific.
The results were sent to Göttingen and scientifically analysed by Gauss and Weber. They published their findings in six volumes under the title "Results from the Observations of the Magnetic Society[1]". A supplementary volume contained maps showing the then-current magnetic data for every location on Earth. Lines connected points of equal declination, inclination, and Earth's magnetic field strength. This publication represented a milestone in the history of natural sciences.
The collaboration between Gauss and Humboldt is also one of the literary themes of the bestselling novel Measuring the World[2] by Daniel Kehlmann, published in 2005, and the film adaptation of the same name, in 2012.
