LineOS is a Linux distribution based on Linux Mint. It is designed to provide a lightweight, user-friendly desktop operating system while maintaining compatibility with a wide range of Linux software. The operating system is distributed free of charge and is available as a downloadable disk image.
The first beta release, LineOS 1.0 Beta (codename “Cookie”), was launched on 22 February 2026. A stable release (version 1.0) is planned for a future date.
Features
LineOS includes several features typical of modern Linux distributions: • A user-friendly interface aimed at ease of use • Compatibility with Linux Mint repositories, allowing access to a large software library • APT package management system for installing and updating software • Lightweight performance suitable for both older and newer hardware • A customizable environment that allows users to modify the system according to their needs
Architecture
LineOS is built on top of Linux Mint, which itself is based on Ubuntu. This allows it to inherit stability, hardware support, and security updates from the upstream distributions.
Release model
LineOS follows a staged release cycle consisting of beta and stable versions. Beta releases are intended for testing and feedback, while stable releases are designed for general use.
Distribution
LineOS is distributed as an ISO image that can be installed on compatible computers or run as a live environment.
