Katifetch is an open-source command-line utility designed to display operating system and hardware information in an aesthetic way, using ASCII art, customized colors, and a modular architecture. It is inspired by Neofetch (GitHub) and other similar system info tools such as Screenfetch (GitHub), Pfetch (GitHub), and Ufetch (GitHub). All these tools are open source and licensed under permissive licenses like MIT.

History

Development of Katifetch started in may of 2025 by the developer known as ximimoments. Originally based on Ubuntu 10.04 minimal installations as a lightweight alternative, Katifetch evolved from a personal script inspired by Neofetch. It quickly grew into a flexible and extensible system information tool with broad compatibility, including support for less conventional platforms such as Android via Termux and virtualized environments.

Katifetch has been included in Fedora's Copr repository for several years and more recently made available in Arch Linux's AUR, providing easy installation for users of popular Linux distributions.

Features

  • Compatible with Linux, Windows, macOS, Android (via Termux), and ChromeOS (Crostini).
  • Automatic detection of virtualized environments such as QEMU, VMWare, and VirtualBox.
  • Modular architecture that facilitates adding or modifying components and themes.
  • Theme system supporting hundreds of ASCII logos from various operating systems and environments.
  • Automated scripts for installation, uninstallation, and updates, especially tailored for Termux.
  • Output display options including centered, left-aligned, and simplified views to suit different terminals.
  • Customizable configuration files (`~/.katifetchrc`) for user preferences.
  • Continuous development with a focus on broad compatibility and user experience.
