Jesus Chrysler Supercar (also known as JC Supercar) is an American alternative rock band from Mesa, Arizona. Formed in 1993, the group was active during the 1990s and became part of the local alternative and hard-rock scene. The band disbanded in 1999 but reunited in 2023, releasing new music in 2024.

History

Formation and 1990s era

Jesus Chrysler Supercar was formed in 1993 in Mesa, Arizona.[1] The founding members were vocalist Mitch Steele, guitarist Jason Corman, drummer Matt Collins, guitarist Jamie Hickerson, and bassist Erick Smith. Steele had moved to Mesa from Saginaw, Michigan; Hickerson from the Los Angeles area; Corman from Grand Island, Nebraska; and Collins from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Smith was a native of the Mesa/Tempe area.[2]

The band spent its early days writing songs and playing local gigs at venues such as Hollywood Alley and Boston's.[1] They gained recognition for their high-energy live shows and guitar-driven sound, blending alternative rock with speedway rock themes.[3] The band won several local awards from Phoenix New Times Best of Phoenix Music Awards readers' polls: "Best Grunge Band" in 1995,[4] "Best Alternative Rock Band" in 1996,[5] and "Best Modern Rock" in 1997 and 1998.[6][7]

The band's debut EP, Supercar (also known as Hay Bailer), was self-released in 1994 and recorded at Red House Studios in Eudora, Kansas, by Ed Rose. It featured six tracks: "Diesel", "Woodhooker", "Sunday Drive", "Tweener", "Big Foatie", and "God".[1]

Their second release, the album Latterday Speedway, came out in 1997 on Token Records. It was recorded at Red House Studios and Mind's Eye Digital in Mesa, Arizona, with producer Larry Elyea. The album included tracks such as "Time Trials", "Coming Clean", "Almond Joy (Tourniquet)", "Quitter", "Gusto", "Cowboys & Engines", "Casino", "China Man's Delight", "Astro K", "Bicycle", "Room Full Of Handsome", "Lov'n Ov'n", "Big Daddy On Fire", "Booth Cooter", and "Thrown Away".[1] Reviews praised its blend of Soundgarden-like rhythms and Radiohead-inspired vocals.[1] During this period, Hickerson left the band and was replaced by guitarist Joey St. Claire.[2]

In 1999, the band released the Land Speed EP on Token Records, recorded at Mind's Eye Digital. Tracks included "Swampfoot", "Dopesick Lunatic", "Jillbilly", "Coming Clean Again", "Stick It", and "Rusty Jones". Outtakes such as "Geronimo", "3-Cross Curve", and "Always Talking" circulated online.[8][9] Critics highlighted the EP's atypical rhythms and Fugazi-influenced guitars, calling it a "thrill-ride knockout punch" with strong hooks.[2]

During the 1990s, the band performed at major events including the CMJ Music Festival in New York City (twice), SXSW, the EAT'M Conference in Las Vegas, and KUPD Fest at Desert Sky Pavilion. They opened for national acts such as Tool, Radiohead, Goo Goo Dolls, Frank Black, Korn, Toadies, and Mike Watt, and played the inaugural race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.[1]

The band secured a demo deal with Columbia Records (produced by Ed Stasium) and a recording offer from Island Records, but the Seagram's merger of Island with Mercury Records derailed it.[2] Bassist Smith then departed, replaced by Mike Brandt. In 2000, ahead of a planned three-week European tour, D&C Productions released the four-song Four Banger EP in the UK, featuring tracks from Land Speed.[2] The band disbanded later that year.[10]

The band's music appeared on compilations including The Buzz From The Southwest (1996, Best Buy; ASIN B01KB2P8NU; track: "Cowboys and Engines"), CMJ Presents Certain Damage! Volume 83 (1997; track: "Coming Clean"), Locals Only 1998 (KEDJ 106.3 FM; track: "3 Cross Curve"), and Up In Flames Volume 1 (1999; track: "Swampfoot").[11]

Hiatus

The band remained inactive for over two decades, with members pursuing other projects.[10]

Reunion and 2020s comeback

In 2023, Corman, Steele, and Collins reunited to record new material, and in 2024, Sunset Alliance Records syndicated the band's full catalog to streaming services.[2] The reunion's first single, "Sludge/Deep Hole", was released in October 2024, marking the band's first new output in 25 years.[12] This was followed by "Two Sticks (Dynamite)" later in 2024.[13]

In early 2025, the band released "Get Out of Dodge", which received positive reviews for its swagger and grit.[14][15] A Phoenix New Times feature in February 2025 announced the band's first full-length album in 25 years.[12]

Musical style

Jesus Chrysler Supercar combines alternative rock aggression with speedway rock elements, featuring heavy guitar tones, energetic vocals, and a high-energy stage presence. Reviews describe their sound as gritty and hard-hitting, drawing from Soundgarden, Radiohead, Fugazi, and The Cars, with a focus on groove over growls.[1][3][15]

Legacy

Phoenix New Times has profiled the band across three decades, highlighting their role in Arizona's alternative rock scene.[1][10][12] Their reunion has renewed interest in the 1990s Arizona rock landscape.[12]
