Volunteering work

Iryna was a medic during Euromaidan, assisting operations as a nurse and tending to wounded protesters, as well as witnessing the shootings of the Heavenly Hundred.

«Memories of Iryna Soloshenko, a volunteer doctor during the Maidan protests.»

Immediately after Russia’s annexation of Crimea, she sought to enlist the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but was rejected. After that she went to the Main Military Clinical Hospital in Kyiv, where she felt she was needed. There she worked as a volunteer from 2014 to 2017.

Iryna Soloshenko transported humanitarian assistance to military and medical staff in the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) zone and assisted in the evacuation of civilians.

In 2015, she married Serhii Lytvynko, head of the emergency department, whom she had met at the Main Military Clinical Hospital in Kyiv, while volunteering there in 2014.

On February 24, 2022, same as in 2014, sought to enlist as a medic in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. However, was declined due to an underaged child under her care. The rejection served as a motivation for her to turn her focus on helping the Main Military Clinical Hospital in Kyiv, as she once already did.

Iryna initiated the refurbishment and upgrade of medical railcars, cooperating with the Ukrainian Railways and Kyiv City Council, ensuring the practical layout and equipment setup for the medical train cars, and their energy autonomy by installing generators.

«Since March 2022, when it became necessary to transport large numbers of wounded to safer hospitals further from the front line, Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia), together with the Medical Forces Command, made the first simple but crucial decisions. In the trains, the side seats were removed to allow stretchers to be brought in. This was extremely important. Thanks to these adapted train cars, many wounded were evacuated during the first month of the full-scale invasion. It was emergency work that saved lives at the time.»[1]

Construction of an emergency department

In 2024 iniciated a total reconstruction of an emergency department of the Main Military Clinical Hospital in Kyiv.

  • A marathon with Serhii Khrapko and Oleksandr Shvetsov. Two prosthetic-using veterans set out to complete a walking marathon to raise funds for a gastroscope for the emergency department for the Main Military Clinical Hospital in Kyiv.

Oleksandr Shvetsov and Serhii Khrapko walked toward each other along the Kyiv–Zhytomyr highway. In doing so, they raised funds for a gastroscope and secured additional donated equipment worth three million for a Kyiv hospital, set a national record, and inspired people with prosthetics.

Specially designed clothing intended for people with limited mobility, including bedridden patients, people with disabilities, post-surgical patients, as well as the elderly and anyone who has difficulty using conventional clothing.

In partnership with the First Ukrainian International Bank, the "We Are of One Blood" agency, and with the involvement of Serhiy Zhadan, an initiative was launched to provide adaptive clothing for evacuation trains and medical facilities in Dnipro and Kharkiv.

Amid the full-scale war, to support operational planning and ensure the timely collection and supply of blood and blood products, the Medical Forces Command established a dedicated Armed Forces Blood Center with branches in Odesa and Lviv. The Center’s task is to coordinate with military structures in planning blood reserves and supplying the entire frontline and military hospitals.

The “Blood Power” initiative is aimed at supporting wounded soldiers and patients in need of urgent blood transfusions.

Through joint efforts, we are not only developing a culture of blood donation in Ukraine, but also saving the lives of those who defend our country.[2]
