IP Infusion Inc. is an American software company that develops network operating systems (NOS) for telecommunications service providers, data center operators, and network equipment manufacturers. Headquartered in Santa Clara, California, it operates as a wholly owned, independently operated subsidiary of the Japanese software company ACCESS CO., LTD. (TSE: 4813).
History
IP Infusion was founded in 1999 by Kunihiro Ishiguro and Yoshinari Yoshikawa. Its technical origins trace to GNU Zebra, an open-source routing software package developed by Ishiguro beginning in 1996, which provided platform-independent implementations of routing protocols including BGP, OSPF, and RIP.[1] Ishiguro and Yoshikawa commercialized this technology as ZebOS, a modular routing and switching protocol stack designed for integration into carrier-grade networking hardware by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The open-source Zebra codebase was later forked by the community into the Quagga project, and subsequently into FRRouting (FRR), which is maintained by the Linux Foundation and remains widely deployed in open-source networking.[2]
In March 2006, ACCESS CO., LTD. agreed to acquire IP Infusion for approximately US$50 million.[3] At the time of the acquisition, IP Infusion's routing and switching software was deployed in networking equipment from vendors including Foundry Networks, Ericsson, Fujitsu, and Accton.[4] ACCESS stated it intended to combine IP Infusion's networking software with its own mobile content delivery technologies to develop platforms for broadband and 3G mobile connectivity.[4]
In July 2018, IP Infusion acquired Northforge Innovations, a Canadian software consulting firm specializing in carrier-grade networking, to expand its engineering capacity for disaggregated networking development.[5]
Products
IP Infusion's primary software platform is OcNOS (Open Compute Network Operating System), a Linux-based NOS designed to run on commodity "white box" hardware from multiple vendors including Edgecore Networks and UfiSpace. OcNOS is available in variants targeting different network roles: OcNOS SP for service provider networks, OcNOS DC for data center environments, and OcNOS CP (formerly ZebOS) as a source-code-level control plane offering for OEMs. The platform supports MPLS, Segment routing, EVPN, and integrated optical transport (IP over DWDM).
OcNOS CP, formerly known as ZebOS, was IP Infusion's original commercial product, designed to allow OEMs to build networking equipment without developing routing and switching protocols from scratch. Upon its launch, the ZebOS platform was adopted by companies including Fortinet, Citrix, A10 Networks, and F5.[6]
In October 2024, OcNOS received MEF 3.0 Carrier Ethernet certification for E-Line, E-LAN, and E-Tree service types, validated on the UfiSpace S9510-28DC platform.[7]
Industry context
IP Infusion has been cited by independent trade publications as one of the principal commercial providers of open networking software, alongside companies such as Broadcom, Cumulus Networks, and Big Switch Networks. In a 2017 editorial article on network disaggregation, SDxCentral noted that for the software layer running on white-box hardware, "some of the big hyperscale players write their own operating systems. Others use operating systems from the likes of Broadcom, Cumulus, IP Infusion, and Big Switch."[8]
GigaOm, an independent technology analyst firm, designated IP Infusion a "Leader" and "Outperformer" in its annual Network Operating System Radar Reports for four consecutive years, from 2021 through 2024, across all three NOS market segments it evaluates: Network Service Providers, Cloud and Network Service Providers, and Enterprise networks.[9] The 2024 GigaOm report evaluated 19 top NOS vendors, including Cisco, Juniper, and Arista.
In 2024, OcNOS 6.4 was named a finalist in the Light Reading Leading Lights Awards in the category for Most Innovative Routing and Switching Solution, alongside Juniper Networks' AI-Native Networking Platform and DZS.[10] The Leading Lights program is judged independently by Light Reading's editorial staff and an external panel of analysts from firms including Omdia, Dell'Oro Group, Heavy Reading, and Vertical Systems Group.[11]
