Template:女性モデル IMALU (イマル, born September 19, 1989) is a Japanese model, talent, and singer. Her real name is Ohtake Imaru (大竹 いまる)[1].
She is from Tokyo. She was affiliated with Esther and Little Tokyo Production before joining TWIN PLANET[2].
Biography
Born around 2:04 PM on September 19, 1989, in Tokyo. Her birth weight was 3,240 grams.[3] Her father is comedian Sanma Akashiya, and her mother is actress Shinobu Otake[4] (parents divorced in September 1992 when she was over 3). Her name "Imaru" was inspired by her father Sanma's personal motto "Ikiteru dake de Maru Mōke" ("Just being alive is a profit" — literally "just living, a perfect score").[5] Her mother Shinobu Otake said she was named after "living in the moment," and her family's Christian background and her grandmother's name "Ester" influenced her.[6] Despite her unique name, Sanma initially opposed it but thought it was "cool" and also because her grandmother's family was Christian.[7]
Her father's experience surviving the Japan Airlines Flight 123 crash influenced his "living in the moment" motto. Sanma, who regularly flew JAL, avoided the crash by taking an earlier flight after completing a TV recording.[8] Her half-brother was born from her mother Shinobu Otake and her ex-husband Hara Haruo, a TBS employee who passed away in 1987.[9]
She attended a private girls' junior high school in Tokyo, then studied abroad in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, where she transferred to Oak Bay High School and graduated in April 2008[4]. She later dropped out of psychology at McGill University.
Her parents are both entertainers, and she has loved music since childhood, taking hip-hop dance lessons, voice training, jazz, and guitar, which led her to pursue a career in entertainment.[10] Her mother, Shinobu Otake, introduced her to the entertainment industry, and her debut was reported by Shinobu.[11] Initially, she did not feel pressure due to her parents' fame but felt their influence afterward.[12]
She debuted as a fashion model in the June 2009 issue of Zipper, where editor Miho Ise said, "Her small height of 150cm is remarkable, but her face is small and well balanced.".[13] In 2009, she played Mayu, the younger sister of the heroine played by Karina in the drama Real Clothes, marking her acting debut.[14]
In late 2009, Universal Music Japan officially announced her major debut, and on January 13, 2010, she debuted with the single Mashed Potato under the Universal Sigma label.
Since April 2013, she has been affiliated with her private agency Little Tokyo Production as its first talent.
On April 5, 2022, she announced her transfer to TWIN PLANET.[15] This transfer was due to the end of her management contract with Little Tokyo Production.
On March 8, 2025, she was awarded the International Women's Day "HAPPY WOMAN AWARD 2025 for SDGs".[16]
The COVID-19 pandemic prompted her to start a two-base lifestyle between Kagoshima/Amami Oshima and Tokyo, which she continues.[17]
Personal Details
- Her surname up to age 2 was "Sugimoto," her father Sanma's real surname. Her parents divorced in September 1992. She was raised by her mother after age 3.
- She has a few memories of living with Sanma, roughly three years, but after their divorce, her parents maintained good relations. She went to movies and had meals with Sanma.[18]
- She often begged Sanma to imitate the character Baikinman's "Ha-Hi Fu-He Ho", and grew attached to him.
- Since childhood, many celebrities visited her home, and she thought it was normal to have celebrities around. When she called out their names on TV, Sanma would teach her "Don't call them directly, even on TV." She also maintained a relaxed attitude on the TV show A-Studio, treating all guests equally.
- She once went to Disneyland with her parents and cousins. Although her parents dislike disguises, Sanma wore a hat and a towel around his neck, but was recognized immediately by his loud laugh.
- She has no memory, but as a child, Sanma ran the relay race in reverse at a school event, making the audience laugh. She was so embarrassed she cried and told him "Don't come anymore!"
- Because her parents are famous, other students asked her repeatedly to be friends; she thought friends come naturally and felt "very sad."
- She inherited her mother's "natural fool" personality, and once, during a quiz about herself, she accidentally gave away an obvious hint, then quickly apologized when everyone guessed correctly.
- When she debuted, her father Sanma told her, "Since you're debuting with your parents' name, work twice as hard." After debut, she cried to Sanma about work and relationships, and he replied, "Why are you crying? Smile, smile." She said, "Back then, I thought 'This person is hopeless,' but it's a typical Sanma advice.".[19] She has never appeared with her father, due to a mutual "no joint appearances" rule.[20][21]
- J-League club Fujieda MYFC player Otake Takuto is her cousin.[22]
- She has collaborated with Electric Comic's Yatsui Ichiro,[23] Takanori Nishikawa,[24] TAKUYA∞ of UVERworld,[25] Yuta Yamasaki, Risa Naka and others. She also had a close friendship with her mother Shinobu Otake and actress Ai Iijima, and attends her birthday parties every year after Ai's death.[26]
- She says she is bad at reading and writing kanji.[27]
- Her favorite foods are pizza and curry.[28]
- She lives with her mother Shinobu Otake at her parental home[29] and keeps two dogs called "Sue" and "Baloo". Baloo was given by her father Sanma and died when she was 13. She has loved dogs since childhood.[30]
- Her parents co-starred as lovers in the drama Nanjō 7-nin Natsu Monogatari (TBS), but she has never watched it because "I don't want to see my parents as lovers".[31]
- She ranked 2nd in ORICON's "Ideal Parent-Child Ranking 2009",[32] and 1st in ORICON's "Expected Active Second-Generation Celebrities 2009".[33] She also ranked 6th in goo's "Celebrities expected to be active in 2010 coming of age" ranking.[34]
