IKO (pronounced "eye-koh") is a global manufacturer of residential and commercial roofing products, insulation and waterproofing systems. The company is headquartered in Toronto, Ontario.[1]

The company manufactures asphalt shingles, metal shingles, roofing accessories, commercial roofing membranes, insulation products and related building envelope materials.[2] IKO has operations in North America, Europe, South America, Asia, Israel and New Zealand. It operates manufacturing facilities across North America and Europe and remains privately held and family-owned.[3]

History

IKO was founded in Calgary, Alberta, in 1951 by Isidore Koschitzky.[1] The company initially manufactured building paper before expanding into coated roll roofing and asphalt shingles.[3]

During the second half of the 20th century, IKO expanded its operations throughout Canada and later into the United States and Europe through manufacturing investments and acquisitions.[3]

IKO's first United States asphalt-shingle manufacturing facility began operations in 1981.[4]

In 2026, IKO marked its 75th anniversary.[5][6]

Operations

IKO manufactures residential roofing shingles, synthetic underlayments, ridge-cap shingles, roofing accessories, commercial roofing membranes, insulation products, metal shingles and waterproofing materials.[2]

The company operates manufacturing and distribution facilities in Canada, the United States, Belgium, England, France, the Netherlands and Slovakia.[7]

IKO describes portions of its manufacturing model as vertically integrated, controlling aspects of raw-material sourcing and production.[1]

Manufacturing expansion

In April 2025, The Wall Street Journal reported that IKO had completed one new United States plant and had four additional plants under construction.[8]

In 2022, the Maryland Department of Commerce announced that IKO had opened a $70 million manufacturing and warehouse facility in Hagerstown, Maryland.[9]

In 2024, Roofing Contractor reported that IKO had begun construction on a $270 million asphalt-shingle manufacturing facility in Clay County, Florida.[10][11] The facility subsequently opened.[12]

IKO also broke ground on a manufacturing plant in Brantford, Ontario.[13]

In 2025, the Missouri Department of Economic Development announced that IKO subsidiary Bismarck Granules would construct a granule-manufacturing facility in Bismarck, Missouri.[14]

In 2026, Business Facilities reported that IKO and security company AMAROK planned manufacturing expansions in Chester County, South Carolina.[15][16]

IKO expanded its metal-roofing manufacturing capacity in Ennis, Texas, with the opening of a $60 million plant.[17][18]

Products

IKO's residential roofing division manufactures asphalt shingles, metal shingles, synthetic underlayments, starter shingles, ridge-cap shingles, ventilation products and roofing accessories.[3]

Its commercial division manufactures modified bitumen roofing membranes, polyisocyanurate insulation products, waterproofing systems and roofing accessories for commercial and industrial construction.[19]

Some IKO shingle products, including its Cambridge Cool Colors line, are designed to meet energy-efficiency building codes such as California's Title 24 standards.[20]

Sustainability

IKO has undertaken recycling and environmental initiatives across some of its manufacturing operations.

In Hawkesbury, Ontario, the company commissioned an asphalt-shingle recycling line that began operating in 2023.[21][22] IKO also entered into a five-year shingle-reprocessing agreement with Northstar.[23]

The company launched a sustainability program covering its manufacturing operations.[24] Solar panels were also installed on the roof of an IKO manufacturing facility in Ohio.[25]

IKO is a member of the Canada Green Building Council.[26]
