Hyperwear is a fitness equipment company based in Austin, Texas. The company produces weighted vests, soft free weights, rucking backpacks, and functional training tools for commercial and home fitness. Hyperwear was founded by Dirk Buikema and has been the subject of independent business and consumer reporting in outlets including the Austin American-Statesman, Austin Business Journal, The Washington Post, and Consumer Reports.[1][2][3][4]
History
Hyperwear released its first products in the early 2010s, beginning with an adjustable weighted vest designed to offer greater mobility than earlier vest designs.[5] A 2012 report in the Austin American-Statesman described the company’s early growth and product development.[1] In 2014, the Austin Business Journal profiled CEO Denver Fredenburg and discussed the company’s strategy and market expansion.[2]
Hyperwear has continued to grow and was named to the Austin Business Journal’s 2025 Fastest-Growing Companies list.[6]
Products
Hyperwear’s product line includes the Hyper Vest weighted vests, SandBell and SteelBell soft free weights, and the Hyper Rope, a weighted battle rope designed for use in limited space. Media coverage has noted the vest’s mobility and the versatility of the company’s soft-weight systems.[5]
Research use
The Hyper Vest PRO has been used in peer-reviewed studies. A 12-month intervention in older adults incorporated Hyperwear’s weighted vest as part of a long-term weight-loss and activity program.[7]
Reception
The Washington Post reported on the use of weighted vests in general-fitness settings and quoted Hyperwear’s founder in coverage of the trend.[3] The Wall Street Journal noted the use of a Hyperwear weight vest in a profile of an endurance athlete.[8] Consumer Reports selected the Hyper Vest as a top pick in a 2025 comparative evaluation.[4]
