A native New Orleanian, he graduated from De La Salle High School and earned a Master of Architecture degree from Tulane University. He co-founded Favrot & Shane Companies and 1st Lake Properties in 1970 with H.M. “Tim” Favrot, growing them into one of Louisiana's largest multifamily residential real estate owners and managers, with a portfolio exceeding 10,000 apartment units across Greater New Orleans, Baton Rouge, the Northshore, and Mississippi Shane has played a prominent role in regional economic development, particularly after the 1983 oil industry collapse, when he led the “Jefferson Edge” initiative for revitalization, later serving as the first chairman of the Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission (JEDCO) and as a founding member of Greater New Orleans Inc. As chairman of Favrot & Shane Companies, he has overseen expansion into thousands of rental units, shopping centers, self-storage facilities, and office buildings, while 1st Lake Properties manages the multifamily portfolio. With his wife Pat, Shane has made extensive philanthropic and cultural contributions to the greater New Orleans area, including hosting hundreds of charitable and social events at their Kenner home and Cars of Yesteryears Museum. The couple has donated numerous public sculptures—over 67, featuring works by artists such as George Rodrigue, Hunt Slonem, James Michalopoulos, and Ida Kohlmeyer—to beautify Jefferson Parish, forming the Henry Shane Sculpture Trail and enhancing public access to art. Shane is also an avid collector, with holdings that include over 160 vintage cars and extensive art. His honors include induction into the National Apartment Association Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame in 2002, as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award from Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans in 2025, recognizing his business success, economic leadership, and lifelong community commitment. Shane and his family, including daughters Michele Shane L’Hoste and Stacey Shane Schott who are active in the companies, continue to influence real estate and civic life in the region.
