Hellspark is a science fiction novel by the American writer Janet Kagan. The plot ostensibly involves a murder investigation, but the text mostly involves describing cultural and linguistic differences among the characters and describing the planet's flora and fauna.

Setting

The setting is an explorer's camp on the recently discovered planet and areas near the camp. The members of the exploratory group are intentionally selected by the authorities so that no one comes from the same culture. Everyone in the exploration group is then expected to speak GalLang, a language created out of all the common elements of all the known languages.

The planet has an ecosystem dominated by weather systems of highly frequent rain and lighting storms. Most plants have some sort of electrically charged mechanism compatible with the lightning discharges, but this also makes them somewhat dangerous for humans. The primary animal encountered is the 'sprookje' (rhymes with 'woke ya'), a questionably intelligent bird-like animal with feathers that is mostly harmless but annoyingly picks one person and parrots exactly what they say.

One driving force of the plot is to discover if the sprookjes are sentient in order to see if that is relevant to the murder.

Plot summary

Primary characters

Tocohl Susumo

Tocohl is the protagonist of the novel. She is from the planet Hellspark where their society encourages multiculturism and speaking multiple languages. Tocohl is also a very good hand-to-hand fighter especially with Maggy to help her with situational and physical awareness.

Maggy

A sentient AI that functions as a virtual assistant to Tocohl, who converses with Maggy subvocally. Maggy also controls a robotic 'arachne', a head-sized orb with mutiple legs that allows people other than Tocohl to have a local object. Maggy is learning about everything along with the reader, mostly how to speak individual languages appropriately and the relevant 'proxemics and kinesics' or body language and gestures.

Oloitokitok

The physicist from the planet Kapiti. He spoke Maa. It is his death that is being investigated.

layli-layli calulan

From the planet Y and the Yn culture/language. She is a shaman and medical doctor with 'espabilities' presumably meaning abilities using extrasensory perception. It turns out that she was secretly partnered with Oloitokitok and .

Tinling Alfvaen

Alfvaen is from the planet Siveyn and speaks the language Siveyn. She suffers from Cane's disease, a disorder where the liver metabolizes sugars into alcohol making her habitually drunk without medication to control it. She becomes a good friend of Tocohl.

Om im Chadeayne

Om im is a surveyor from Ssu-ma. Ssu-ma speakers have complex proxemics (body space commmunication) where the feet are highly taboo (and words for feet are expletives). He becomes a kind of body guard assistant to Tocohl. He carries and brandishes a knife often but only as conversational emphasis.

swift-Kalat twis Jalakat

Swift-Kalat is an ethologist from the planet Jenji and speaks Jenji. He is one of the few researchers who believe that the sprookjes are sapient. He requested Tocohl's appearance.

Buntecreih

Buntec is also a surveyor from Ssu-ma, like Om im.

Megeve

A technician from the planet Maldene. He speaks Maldeneantine.

Reception

At the time of publication, the novel only received the award of 24th place on the Locus Poll for Best Science Fiction Novel[1] https://www.sfadb.com/Janet_Kagan

Themes

As is common in science fiction, there are a number of aspects of world-building that are explored.

Language

Most every character comes from a different planet and has their own unique culture and language, with different body space and orientation rules, 'proxemics', and different gestures, 'kinesics'. This often creates misunderstandings.

Sentience/sapience

A major question is about the sapience of the sprookjes. Parroting back words verbatim is a sign of a kind highly attuned auditory technique, but is not necessarily a sign of intelligence or consciousness or, the unspoken target, legal responsibility. Also, some of the characters from an emoitional bond with Maggy, who often acts human-like (with some implicit comparison with the sprookjes).

Sex and Gender

Though rare for the decade of publication, the characters are split well among the two genders. While friendship and more serious romance occurs, these are rarely explicit (except in the case of Oloitokitok and leyli-leyli).

Style and structure

While the novel is nominally a murder mystery, the bulk of the novel is in exposition and explanation of the language and cultural difficulties and resolutions among the survey team members.

Legacy

The podcast Lingthusiasm recommended[2] the novel in how it represented issues in linguistics, among them such topics as gestures and code switching.
