Hasara Union is a union of Sreenagar Upazila in Munshiganj District, Bangladesh. Munshiganj District was formed in 1984 by separating from Dhaka District, and the union has been a part of the administrative structure ever since.

Geographical Location

Hasara Union is a significant union within Sreenagar Upazila of Munshiganj District in the Dhaka Division of Bangladesh. It is bounded by Birtara Union to the east, Baraikhali Union to the west, Sholaghar Union to the south, and Keain Union to the north. The union encompasses a total area of 15.292 square kilometers (3,709 acres), and according to the latest 2022 Population and Housing Census, it has a population of 22,808 with a population density of approximately 1,492 persons per square kilometer.[1][2][3]

The union consists of three villages and three mouzas: Hasara, Laskarpur, and Alampur.[2] The Hasara Union Parishad building was established in 1989 to facilitate administrative operations.[3] Key establishments in the union include the Hasara Post Office adjacent to Hasara Kali Kishore School and College, and the Hasara Highway Police Station.

The geographical significance of Hasara Union has increased substantially as the Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga Expressway and the parallel railway line pass through its core. Consequently, this union is considered a strategic location midway between Dhaka and the Mawa Expressway. The distance from Dhaka city to Hasara Union is a mere 20 kilometers, providing the union with easy, rapid, and effective connectivity to the capital.

In terms of transportation, Hasara is highly accessible. Direct travel to Hasara Union is possible from Ichapura via Singpara, passing through Birtara Union and taking Chowdhury Road. Furthermore, regular bus services from Baraikhali Union and Sekharnagar facilitate easy travel to Dhaka via Hasara. Hasara can also be easily reached from Nimtola and the Sreenagar Upazila headquarters.

A notable geographical feature of this union is that a section of the Arial Beel falls within its jurisdiction.[4] As a result, the natural environment and biodiversity here are highly enriched, and the beel plays a crucial role in agriculture-dependent livelihoods. The flow of various canals and wetlands through the union also plays a supportive role in irrigation and fish farming.[5]

The three main villages of Hasara Union are Hasara, Laskarpur, and Alampur, which collectively play a significant role in the social and economic development of the union.[6]

Due to these natural resources and geographical features, Hasara Union is considered a significant hub for education, agriculture, and environmental conservation in Munshiganj District.

Demographics

According to the 2022 census, the total population of Hasara Union is 22,808, of which 10,697 are male and 12,111 are female. The total number of households is 5,586. Among these, there are 5,552 general households, 12 institutional households, and 22 other households. Additionally, 3 people live in 3 floating households.[7][8]

Education

The educational system of Hasara Union is relatively developed. According to the 2022 census, the average literacy rate among the population aged 7 years and above is 81.44%. Of this, the male literacy rate is 82.43% and the female literacy rate is 80.58%. The total number of students aged 5 to 29 years in the union is 6,349; of these, 3,153 are male and 3,196 are female.[9]

Religious and Social Institutions

Hasara Union of Sreenagar Upazila in Munshiganj District, Bangladesh, is a settlement enriched with religious, cultural, and social diversity across the villages of Hasara, Laskarpur, and Alampur. For many years, Muslim and Hindu communities have coexisted in this region. Madrasas

There are a total of 10 madrasas in Hasara Union, which have been playing a significant role in the propagation and expansion of religious education. Eidgah Grounds

There are a total of 4 Eidgah grounds in Hasara Union, where the congregations of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are regularly held. These Eidgah grounds are considered an important part of the religious rituals and ceremonies of the local Muslim community. Hasara Bazaar

Hasara Bazaar is the primary commercial center of Hasara Union in Sreenagar Upazila of Munshiganj District, Bangladesh. The market is situated at the intersection of the Dhaka–Mawa Expressway, the Hasara–Baraikhali Road, and local religious structures. On the southern side, there is the C.M.B. Jame Mosque and several temples of the Hindu community where Kirtan is regularly organized. On the western side, there is an open field where the youth play sports. This market is a hub for buying and selling agricultural products, fish, vegetables, and daily necessities, making it a crucial center of the local economy.[15]

Hasara Fish Depot

One of the key features of Hasara Bazaar is the active fish depot. Fresh fish from Arial Beel, the Padma River, and surrounding water bodies are supplied here daily. In particular, Padma hilsa and local fish species such as Tengra, Shing, Puti, Rui, and Catla are available. The depot starts operating around the time of Fajr prayers, and the trading is completed by morning. Fish is supplied from here to various parts of the country, including Dhaka.

Alampur Bazaar

Alampur Bazaar is a medium-sized market located to the west of Hasara Bazaar, alongside the Hasara–Baraikhali Road. Being adjacent to Arial Beel, indigenous fish and seasonal vegetables are supplied here early every morning. The Baraikhali Union Parishad is situated on its western side. The market is an important center for marketing local agricultural and fishery products.[15]

Hasara Kali Kishore School and College

Hasara Kali Kishore School and College is a traditional educational institution in Sreenagar Upazila of Munshiganj District. It was established on May 26, 1879, by Zamindar Kali Kishore Sen Chowdhury. He bequeathed his personal property for the school. In 1915, it gained recognition from the University of Calcutta and was converted into a college in 2014. Currently, there is a full-fledged campus with a three-storied building, six ponds, a playground, a science laboratory, a computer lab, a library, and a prayer room. Students regularly participate in various competitions.[16]

Alam Gazi's Dargah

Alam Gazi's Dargah is a historical religious site in Hasara Union. It is also well-known as the Dargah of Hasara. Hazrat Shah Alam Gazi arrived in this region in 1721 with the purpose of preaching Islam and established a mazar (shrine) here. There is a large dighi (pond) adjacent to the dargah. According to hearsay, in the past, necessary items for weddings used to be supplied from the dargah.[17][18]

Pal's House

Pal's House (Paler Bari) is an ancient Hindu architecture-based building that carries the heritage of an influential family of the Pal dynasty. Its architectural style bears the influence of the British period. The high roof, carved wooden doors and windows, and wide verandas of the house still survive as historical monuments. It was a center for traditional religious and cultural activities.
