Fred Chong Kyan Vui (Chinese: 张捷惟; born December 28, 1973) is a Malaysian entrepreneur, film producer, and media executive. He is the founder and Group CEO of WebTVAsia, one of Asia's largest multi-platform networks,[1] and founder of Byond Asia, a company focused on AI-driven digital human technologies.[2] Chong is known for his early contributions to Asia's creator economy, digital media distribution, and the commercialization of AI-powered virtual human interfaces.
Early life and education
Fred Chong was born on December 28, 1973, in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. He developed an early interest in music and creativity, winning awards in songwriting competitions during his teenage years despite not having formal training in music notation.
He pursued higher education at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, where he obtained a Master's degree in Engineering Management (MEM) in 1999.[1] He later studied Film Producing at the New York Film Academy, combining technical and creative disciplines that would shape his future career in media and technology.[3]
Career
Early career and telecommunications (1990s–2000s)
Chong began his entrepreneurial journey in the early 2000s during the rise of mobile telecommunications. He won the Nokia Asia Best Ringtone Creation Award, earning recognition as one of Asia's top ringtone producers.[4]
He subsequently founded HIPMobile, a mobile content company that worked with telecommunications operators including Maxis and StarHub. The company was later acquired by YTL Corporation, where Chong became one of the youngest CEOs within the conglomerate at age 29.[4][5]
Media, music, and film production (2005–2013)
In 2005, Chong founded Prodigee Media, focusing on music production and artist development. He collaborated with established artists such as Grasshopper, Kelly Chen, Elva Hsiao, and Sheila Majid.[1]
Chong expanded into film production, producing commercially successful films including Nasi Lemak 2.0 (2011). The film achieved significant box office success in Malaysia, grossing over RM 7 million.[6] He has been credited with discovering and nurturing emerging talents in Asia, including Namewee and Karen Kong.
WebTVAsia and the creator economy (2013–present)
In 2013, Chong founded WebTVAsia, a digital media and entertainment company focused on online content creation and distribution. As of 2025, WebTVAsia manages over 3,000 creators across Asia, generating 7+ billion monthly views and reaching 800+ million combined subscribers.[5] The company operates 11 regional offices across Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, China, Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
WebTVAsia operates four key business pillars:
