File Conversor is a free, open-source, cross-platform file manipulation and conversion utility. It allows conversion between various file types—as seen in popular GUI tools like FormatFactory—while also providing additional features such as rotation, compression, merging, mirroring, and more. The software is operable via command-line interface and integrates with OS file explorers (e.g., Windows Explorer, Nautilus, Dolphin, Finder).
History
File Conversor was designed in Python by Andre Luiz Romano Madureira[1] as a cross-platform solution. The first public release (version 0.1.1) was published via Chocolatey for Windows on August 6, 2025.[2] It was inspired by existing open-source utilities such as FormatFactory and Tichau’s File Converter.[3]
Features
- Multi-format conversion: Audio, video, image, and document formats
- Batch processing via CLI or file explorer context menu
- File manipulation: rotate, mirror, compress, merge, split
- Cross-platform support: Windows, Linux, macOS
- Integration with file managers (Windows Explorer, support for other file managers on the way)
- Automatic external dependency installation: using package managers (Scoop, Chocolatey, Homebrew)
Availability
| Platform | Details |
|---|---|
| Windows | Chocolatey[4], PyPi [5], Installer (.exe file) [6] |
| Linux & macOS | PyPi[5]. Source code available on GitHub; build instructions provided in README.[7] |
Dependencies

- LibreOffice / Microsoft Office (office suite)
- FFmpeg (media file conversion)
- qpdf (PDF handling)
- Ghostscript (PDF compression)
License
File Conversor is released under the Apache License 2.0, allowing personal and commercial use.
Reception
While still in its early stages, File Conversor has been noted for its:
- Versatility in supported formats
- Ease of use via CLI and context menu integration
- Reliance on robust, widely-used backends (LibreOffice, FFmpeg, qpdf, Ghostscript)
