FMJAM (stylised: fmjam or FM JAM) is a music publishing house from Tuzla, Bosnia Herzegovina.

FMJAM, originally as a radio show, was founded in the year 1999 by Emir Alagić (DJ Soul) and Erol Tahirović. The show was focussed on the expansion of the Hip-Hop movement and its subculture in Bosnia Herzegovina. Mirza Čehajić was the designer for the first logo and was responsible for the label’s early online presence.[1]

History

Origin 1999–2000

FMJAM emerged on 13th December 1999 as a radio show on the Tuzla radio station Radio Kameleon. The presenters were Emir Alagić (DJ Soul) and Erol Tahirović. The show presented Hip-Hop and its culture, it was also the entry point and first contact of this music with local artists. The group connected with many other artists, the “AGO” Graffiti Crew, the Dirty Angelz rap group, as well as the Breakdance-Crew and the band Defence. Also in the same year, Edo Maajka and DJ Soul founded the hip-hop group Diciplinsla Komisija.[2] In this time, FMJAM organised their first performances and concerts.

2000–2001

The first Hip Hop entertainment programmes and events from FMJAM were organised at the turn of the millennium in various discos and nightclubs in the city of Tuzla. Through the growing reach of the Kameleon radio station, contacts emerged between Hip-Hop artists throughout the whole of Bosnia Herzegovina. Thanks to the web-portal fmjam.com, Hip-Hop and its subculture was popularised in the country, in other countries in the former Yugoslavia and in the wider Bosnian Diaspora. Erol Tahirović started a new segment of the radio show in which hip-hop artists could introduce themselves to the shows audience, either on the airwaves or through the website. This led to an increase in collaborations between artists, who created an organised and united hip-hop scene in Bosnia Herzegovina.[3]

2001–2008

In the following years, artists from FMJAM began publishing their own solo albums. In 2002, the first album from Edo Maajka was published by the Croatian record label Menart. Following this, the collaboration between Edo Maajka, Frenkie and Defence became ever stronger.[4][5] Whilst working on the release of various albums, FMJAM were, in 2001, preparing for the first hip-hop festival named Unity. This festival was a collection of artists from Bosnia Herzegovina and others from the wider region. Unity took place annually until 2010.[6]

Artists from FMJAM numerous awards and were nominated for many others. Among the awards were Porin, Davorin, the MTV Europe Music Awards, Zlatna Koogla and Crni Mačak.[7][8] In 2003, Edo Maajka played the role of protagonist in the documentary film Trajni nastanjeni stranac and also acted in the 2007 film titled Sevdah o rodama.[9][10]

In 2003, Edo Maajka released the title song for the film Golden Valley Sarajewo. In the same year, FMJAM took part in the production of the first Bosnian rap-opera Prosjačka Opera. Frenkie released the album Odličan CD in 2005. This album was awarded the music prize Davorin. The song Soundtrack was used in the Hollywood film The Incredible Hulk, the FMJAM artist was invited to the film’s premiere at the Sarajevo Film Festival.[11][12]

In 2006, Frenkie released the album DOSTA!, meaning in English ENOUGH! That is also the name for an active youth group in Bosnia Herzegovina, a group that Frenkie belonged to and used his album release to advertise them. The goal of this movement was to fight for human rights, they were against nationalism and the nationalist parties and fought for the betterment and for securing the future of Bosnia Herzegovina. The album was only released in Bosnia Herzegovina, with all the proceeds that were made being donated to the youth movement.

In 2006, the band Defence, Frenkie being an active member, published the first Bosnian Reggae album titled Baga Music. In the same year, Moonjah and DJ Soul formed the DJ-duo Baga Sound.

The radio show FMJAM was removed from the station Radio Kameleon and was relocated to the state-run station BH Radio 1. At the end of 2012, DJ Soul ended the radio show, instead focussing more on the management and marketing of the artists that were fostered and emerged through FMJAM.
