Comment: The tone of this article is distinctly negative, drawing only on four sources - all critical of Champion. I Googled his name and found he had written articles for The Guardian, The Los Angeles Times and The Chicago Sun-Times but these are not mentioned. The career section is brief and unreferenced; the article solely focuses on the "Controversies". Wikipedia articles need to be written from a neutral point of view (WP:NPOV) "representing significant views fairly, proportionately and without bias". Paul W (talk) 12:12, 13 May 2026 (UTC)
Edward Champion is an American writer, blogger, and podcaster known for founding the literary website Reluctant Habits and hosting The Bat Segundo Show. His public profile has been significantly shaped by controversy surrounding his conduct and interactions within the literary community.
Career
Champion founded Reluctant Habits, an independent literary website that published interviews and commentary on contemporary literature.[1] He also hosted The Bat Segundo Show, a podcast featuring interviews with writers and cultural figures. Authors who appeared on the show included Martin Amis, Paul Auster, Bret Easton Ellis, Jonathan Franzen, Joyce Carol Oates, John Updike and Richard Russo.[citation needed] He has contributed to The Guardian,[2] The Los Angeles Times,[3] The Millions[4] and The Chicago Sun-Times. He was an outside candidate for the board of the National Book Critics Circle in 2008.[5] He won a Parsec Award for podcasting in 2018.[6]
Although he developed a following through independent literary media, Champion's career has been overshadowed by disputes, conflicts, and allegations regarding his behavior toward other writers and critics. He has been described as "often controversial," but "always thought-provoking."[7]
Controversies
Champion became a highly controversial figure within literary and online publishing circles during the 2000s and 2010s. A 2015 investigative feature by Molly McArdle in Brooklyn Magazine documented allegations from numerous writers, editors, and critics who accused Champion of harassment, intimidation, misogynistic rhetoric, and threatening behavior within the literary community.[8]
On September 26, 2014, J.K. Trotter in Gawker described a "threatening meltdown" that led to Champion being removed from professional opportunities and further damaged his standing in the literary community.[9] Three days later, an article in Salon by Katie McDonough described Champion as "more than an angry blogger" and framed his conduct as part of a broader pattern of men who "abuse women" in online media spaces.[10] McDonough wrote that his behavior reflected "a pattern that is recognizable to many women who work online," citing multiple accounts of alleged harassment and misogynistic language. In The Stranger on October 3, 2014, Paul Constant placed Champion within a wider critique of sexism in the publishing industry, citing his conduct as an example of how women writers have been targeted and mistreated in literary culture.[11]
The Brooklyn Magazine article described repeated incidents in which Champion allegedly targeted writers and critics through blog posts, emails, social media, and public confrontations. Several authors accused him of abusive conduct and reported feeling unsafe following interactions with him.[8] Critics cited his repeated use of sexualized and demeaning language toward female writers, as well as explicit commentary about women's bodies and sexuality in nonsexual contexts. These accounts argue that his behavior contributed to a hostile environment for women in literary media.[8][10]
The controversies intensified in 2014 following online attacks directed at Porochista Khakpour and Emily Gould, after which Champion's Twitter account was temporarily suspended.[8] McCardle described Champion as creating a climate of fear around criticism and professional disagreement, with some of his targets alleging that he contacted employers, family members, and colleagues of people with whom he was in conflict.[8] The accumulation of these allegations, reported across multiple publications, significantly damaged his reputation within mainstream literary culture.
Personal life
Champion was in a long-term relationship with writer and publishing journalist Sarah Weinman, news editor for Publishers Marketplace and co-author of Publishers Lunch. The relationship ended in 2014 following escalating controversies surrounding his conduct.[8]
