Dukes of Chutney is an American experimental music project associated with ambient music, dub, dream pop, field recordings, and experimental electronic composition.
Critical reception
The group’s 2020 album Hazel was selected as Album of the Day by Bandcamp Daily, which described the record as combining ambient music, dream pop, and field recordings.[1]
The album was included in a 2020 album roundup by the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.[2]
MOJO magazine awarded Hazel four stars, describing the album as “dreamlike and wistful” and comparing its sound to Balearic drift and ambient pop traditions.[3]
HHV Mag reviewed Hazel, comparing the group’s music to ambient dub and psychedelic pop traditions.[4]
The music publication Ban Ban Ton Ton described Hazel as blending dream pop, dub, and experimental composition.[5]
Cool Hunting described the group’s Domino EP as cinematic and atmospheric.[6]
The music website Test Pressing included the group’s work in its year-end coverage of notable releases from the Balearic and experimental music scene.[7]
History
Dukes of Chutney emerged from collaborations between filmmaker and composer Dustin Lynn and musician John Paul Jones. The project later expanded to include Petra.
The group released the EP Domino in 2013 before issuing their debut full-length album Hazel in 2020.[8]
Dukes of Chutney were featured multiple times on Tim Sweeney’s Beats in Space radio program and released music through Beats in Space Records.[9][10][11]
