Drew Shula is a social entrepreneur and environmentalist.[1] He is the founder and CEO of Verdical Group, a sustainability and green building consulting firm based in Los Angeles.[2] He is also the founder of the annual Net Zero Conference and Trailblazer Awards, the world's largest event focused on net zero building.[3]
Early life
Shula grew up in Belfast, Maine, where he worked as a house painter.[4] At 18, he attended the University of Notre Dame for a five-year program studying Architecture, Urbanism, and Philosophy[5]. After graduating, he went on to work for Jones Lang LaSalle, Jerde, and Thomas Properties Group[4].
Verdical Group
In 2012[6], Shula created Verdical Group in his garage in Pasadena, California as a consulting firm for architectural design and building construction with an ultra-focus on sustainability and carbon reduction.[7] The company has expanded to over a dozen employees and contributed to over 100 building projects with companies including NASA, LAX, Google, Echelon Studios in Hollywood, Long Beach City College, and UC Riverside.[8]
In 2014, Shula founded the first annual Net Zero Conference in Los Angeles in order to educate clients of Verdical Group about net zero building. The conference has grown to 1,500 attendees[9] and held their 12th annual conference in October 2025 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.[10]
Achievements and activism
Shula is one of only six individuals who have been honored as a LEED Fellow[11] as well as a Living Future Hero.[12] He frequently speaks on the building industry’s climate impact and net zero design at events such as the Greenbuild International Conference, Metropolis Magazine DesignTV, Living Future unConference, Cornell University, and the AIA 1.5 Degrees Celsius Symposium on Climate Change.[12] Additionally, he serves on several advisory boards, including USGBC-CA, Woodbury University School of Architecture, and the Living Future LA Collaborative.[13][1]
