Drama Box (simplified Chinese: 戏剧盒) is a Singapore socially-engaged theatre company founded in 1990 by Kok Heng Leun. The company focus on community engagements in addressing social issues.

History

In 1990, a group of graduates and current students of National University of Singapore Drama Group decided to form a theatre company, as they liked the communal life of theatre-making.[1] They wanted to continue their interest even after graduated, and to maintain their friendship.

Having collaborated with many theatre practitioners over the years, Drama Box's core artistic team now includes Koh Hui Ling, Kok Heng Leun, and Han Xuemei.

Kok Heng Leun stepped down as the Co-Artistic Director in 2022 to be the founder, artist. Currently, Koh Hui Ling and Han Xuemei remained as the Co-Artistic Director of the company.[2]

The first performance was a double bill of The Zoo Story & Singles (动物园与单身贵族), performed at the former Substation Theatre from 29 to 30 April 1991.[3]

In 1992, Drama Box presented Singapore's first R21 Chinese language theatre production Another Tribe. touches on the topic of homosexuality. Considered to be Drama Box's debut production on marginalised and sensitive topics.[4]

The office was housed in the former Telok Ayer Performing Arts Centre in 1994 until 1997, before moving to current location at Chinatown.

Then continued with first local martial arts theatre production Leng-Geh-Mng in 1998.[5] First musical with Mr Beng in 1999.[6]

The company started presenting their first community theatre performance in 2001 with Lian Can Cook.[7] Followed with Singapore's first outdoor forum theatre performance, Have You Eaten?.[8]

Drama Box collaborated with UFM 100.3 to launched the world's first Forum Theatre radio play Pulitzer Book.[9]
