The Disability Resource Hub, is a disability cultural & community space located in Pepper Canyon Hall on the campus of the University of California, San Diego. The space is a byproduct of nearly a decade of student-led advocacy efforts to create a space where disabled students could congregate & host events. [1] The Disability Resource Hub is distinguished from the already existing Office of Disability (OSD) as it represents a shift from the “medical model of disability” to what advocates described as the “social model of disability.” [2]
2025-2026 Disability Student Advocacy at UCSD
During the fall 2025 quarter students from the Students' Civil Liberties Union, the Blind Snakes Co-operative and the then Vice President of the office of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Aryan Dixit attended A.S. Senate meetings during Week 4 & 5. During week 4, their initial appearance, members of these organizations spoke during public comment, and advocated for a Disabled Student Resource Center. They emphasized that disabled students make up a significant portion of the campus population and a dedicated space was needed. During this initial attempt students from this coalition requested around $10,000 from the University of California, San Diego Associated Students to go towards the physical location of the potential center and any cost associated with operating the space. Ultimately resulting in the request being put on the agenda for the following week. [3]
The following week, during the week 5 A.S. Senate meeting, the coalition including the Students' Civil Liberties Union, the Blind Snakes Co-operative and the Vice President of the office of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion again came out in support of the creation of a “Disability Resource Center.” Student advocates from these groups again came to give public comments in support of the center. With reports even highlighting the use of signs to express their concerns towards the Office of Disabilities (OSD) & the A.S. Senate itself, which were held up behind advocates while they spoke. With some even reading “OSD won’t listen, will you?" & "Get off your phone.” [4] Ultimately, leading to the A.S. Senate to unanimously increase the coalitions original request of $10,000 to $14,000 which would be then allocated to the Office of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion, to go towards the expected operational costs of a Disability Resource Center. [5]
The Official Announcement
On January 30th, 2026, then UCSD A.S. President William Simpson announced via a social media post that the Disability Resource Hub would be officially opening up during the fall 2026 quarter. With the Hub taking the space which once housed the Stuart Art Space. [6]
Efforts to Preserve Disability Activism History at UCSD
Disabled Student activist such as Blind Snakes Co-operative founder Matthew-Diego Benny during the initial announcement of the Hub emphasized to the UCSD Guardian in an interview the importance of preserving and documenting the history of disability activism at the University of California, San Diego at which eventually culminated in creation of the space. [7] Eventually leading to the publishing of piece dedicated to the history behind the Hub, which included input from various disability activist from the past & present including former Disability Student Alliance leader Hannah Nguyen. [8]
Much of the events & timeline which would be covered in the dedicated UCSD Guardian piece published on April 6th, 2026, would be derived from a larger student lead research report, authored by student activist Aryan Dixit & Matthew-Diego Benny. This report identified the idea that disability activism at the University of California, San Diego constantly faced a form of corporate amnesia, essentially over the last decade a cycle emerged where for a period disability advocacy on campus would gaining momentum as a new organization and group of students would spearhead that particular effort. But then eventually those experienced disability advocates would graduate out, leaving a knowledge gap, and then ultimately restarting that cycle. [9]
